Chapter 6 - The Long Road Back

Three weeks had passed since the night the world fell apart in my living room.

Our apartment felt unnaturally silent now, but it was a peaceful silence—a clean, unburdened quiet that we were slowly learning to navigate. The smell of cheap perfume and grease was entirely gone, replaced by the scent of fresh air from open windows and the lemon polish I had used to scrub every inch of the mahogany furniture Carmen had touched.

I had taken a two-month leave of absence from my project management firm. My career, which had once felt like the absolute center of my universe, was now secondary. My sole focus was rebuilding the shattered spirits of my wife and daughter.

In the kitchen, Jessica was standing near the island, slowly peeling an apple. Her right wrist was still wrapped in a light surgical bandage, but the raw, angry redness had faded to a light pink scar.

Olivia was sitting on a soft rug in the living room, playing with a set of wooden building blocks. Her small hands were wrapped in thin, breathable protective sleeves. She still flinched slightly whenever a loud noise echoed in the hallway, but the terrifying, flat emptiness in her eyes had begun to recede, replaced by the familiar spark of childhood curiosity.

"How are your hands feeling today, baby?" I asked, sitting down on the rug beside her.

Olivia looked up at me, offering a small, sweet smile. "They don't burn as much today, Daddy. Look, I built a high tower for my bear."

"It's a magnificent tower, sweetie," I said, gently kissing the top of her head.

I looked up as Jessica walked over, carrying two cups of chamomile tea. She handed one to me and sat down beside us on the floor, leaning her head gently against my shoulder.

"Marcus called ten minutes ago," Jessica said softly.

"What did he say?"

"The district attorney finalized the plea deal offers for the rest of the network," she said. "Ray Vance pleaded guilty to extortion and money laundering to avoid a federal trial. He gave full testimony against your mother in exchange for a twelve-year sentence."

"And Carmen?" I asked, the name no longer causing the sharp pang of anxiety it once did.

"Her public defender tried to argue for a mental competency evaluation, but the court psychiatrist declared her fully sane and aware of her actions," Jessica replied. "The trial date is set for November. Marcus said with Vance's testimony and the ledgers, she has zero chance of acquittal. The DA is pushing for thirty years without parole."

I nodded slowly, taking a sip of the warm tea. Justice was moving with slow, heavy wheels, but it was moving nonetheless.

"The bank also finished their internal investigation," Jessica added, a slight note of relief in her voice. "Because the wire transfers were authorized under physical duress and documented extortion, the bank's fraud insurance is reimbursing seventy percent of the stolen trust fund money next week."

"That's incredible, Jess," I said, wrapping my arm around her waist and pulling her tight against me. "We'll put it right back into Olivia's college account, somewhere no one can ever touch it."

"Zayden..." Jessica turned her head to look into my eyes, her expression serious yet deeply tender. "I'm sorry I didn't fight harder. I'm sorry I let her take over our lives."

"Don't you ever apologize for being victimized by a monster, Jessica," I said firmly, taking her bandaged hand in mine and kissing the palm gently. "I was the one who was blind. I brought her here. I failed to protect you both because I was too foolish to see through her lies. I spent my whole life trying to earn the love of a woman who didn't know how to love anything except money and power. But that ends now. I will spend the rest of my life making this up to you and Olivia."

Olivia looked up from her building blocks, seeing her mother and me holding each other. She crawled over, climbing onto our laps and wrapping her small, gauze-covered arms around our necks as tightly as she could.

"We're a team, right Daddy?" she whispered.

"The strongest team in the world, sweetie," I smiled, wrapping my arms around my entire world. "The absolute strongest."
