Chapter 5 - The Escalation

News of the eviction spread through our social circle like wildfire.
By Wednesday afternoon, my phone was buzzing incessantly with messages from former shower guests, mutual friends, and Daniel’s relatives. Linda had wasted no time spinning her narrative, telling anyone who would listen that I had "suffered a hormonal breakdown" and was "trying to ruin her son out of spite."
I ignored the noise and focused entirely on the legal assault.
On Thursday morning, Sarah Lin called me into her office with an update.
"Daniel’s attorney filed an emergency motion for a temporary restraining order to block the eviction and halt the demand on the promissory notes," Sarah said, sliding a court document across her desk. "They’re claiming marital asset commingling based on the fact that Daniel did some contractor work on the main house."
"How much work?" I asked.
"He claims he installed the kitchen island and replaced the roof, value estimated at $45,000," Sarah replied. "He’s asking the judge to grant him equity credit against the land value."
I pulled my tablet from my bag, accessed my cloud archives, and pulled up the original invoices.
"Daniel’s company didn't install the kitchen island, Sarah," I said, showing her the screen. "A high-end design firm from Chicago installed it. I paid them $38,000 directly from my Vance Trust account. As for the roof, Daniel’s crew laid the shingles, but my trust purchased all the materials and paid his subcontractors directly."
Sarah chuckled, making a note on her legal pad. "He’s digging his own grave. We’ll attach these paid invoices to our cross-motion."
"What about the security camera footage from the pavilion?" I asked.
"The judge assigned to the emergency motion is Judge Harold Vance—no relation to your family, but a notoriously traditional, no-nonsense magistrate who despises domestic abuse and bad-faith litigation," Sarah grinned. "I’ve included the video of the cake incident as Exhibit A in our response to show a pattern of harassment and hostile living conditions."
At 2:00 PM that afternoon, I drove to the local bank to review the joint account statements one final time before freezing the line of credit.
While sitting in the private manager’s office, my phone chimed with a security notification from the estate's smart-home application.
MOTION DETECTED: NORTH BARN - CAMERA 02
I opened the live video feed on my phone.
Two large flatbed tow trucks were parked outside the North Barn. Daniel and two of his workers were actively loading an excavator and a skid-steer loader onto the trailers.
They were trying to move the machinery off the property before the 30-day notice expired to avoid the possessory lien.
I stood up immediately. "Sarah, Daniel is moving the equipment out of the barn right now."

"He can't do that," Sarah said sharply. "The promissory note contract includes an automatic standstill clause on all secured assets upon default notice! He’s committing asset conversion!"
"I'm ten minutes away," I said. "Call the sheriff's department."
