Chapter 9 - The Storm Inside

The kiss wasn't gentle.
It was hungry, fierce, a sudden release of weeks of unspoken desire, fear, and dangerous tension that had been building between us since the night the coffee cup hit the diner wall.
Alessandro pulled me onto his lap, his large, warm hands wrapping around my waist, lifting me effortlessly against his chest. I gasped into his mouth, my fingers tangling in his damp dark hair, pressing myself closer to the heat of his body.
He tasted like scotch, rain, and power.
Every rational voice in my head—every warning about mob bosses, danger, my mother's safety, my career—was completely silenced by the overwhelming, electric feeling of his mouth against mine, his hands holding me as if I were the only real thing in his dark, violent world.
Alessandro groaned against my lips, his hand sliding up my back beneath my shirt, his fingers warm against my skin, pulling me closer until there was no space left between us.
"Clara," he whispered against my mouth, his voice dark, broken, and filled with a raw vulnerability I had never heard from him before. "Clara..."
I pulled back slightly, breathing heavily, resting my forehead against his.
His dark eyes were wide, burning with a fire that sent shivers straight down my spine.
"If you let me do this," Alessandro whispered, his fingers gripping my hip tightly, "there is no going back. You won't just be my estate manager, Clara. You will be mine. And my enemies will make you their target."
I looked at his chest, at the fresh white bandage covering his wound, at the scars of a life lived in the shadows. Then I looked into his eyes—the eyes of a man who had protected my mother, who had built a fortress for me, who looked at me not as a helpless woman, but as his equal.
"I spent my whole life being invisible, Alessandro," I said, my voice steady, unyielding, and clear. "I spent my whole life bowing to people who treated me like garbage. I am not running away now."

Alessandro stared at me, a fierce, brilliant smile breaking across his handsome face.
He pulled me down into the soft mattress, his arms wrapping around me, and kissed me with a passion that swept away the storm outside, the blood on the floors, and the fear of tomorrow.
