Chapter 9 - The Ambush at the Gates

Four days after the summit at Cernobbio, the inevitable strike occurred.

It did not come in the form of a legal lawsuit or a diplomatic port seizure. Sergio Vitali, ruined and desperate, had chosen the old, brutal path: an assassination strike.

It was two o'clock on a foggy Thursday afternoon.

Elena was in the main security command room on the ground floor, reviewing the perimeter camera feeds with Marco Bellini. The estate was operating at maximum readiness. Additional armed guards had been positioned along the perimeter walls, and the iron gates were locked forty-eight hours a day.

"The south sector is clear," Marco said, pointing to a monitor showing the dense forest behind the estate. "Strictly thermal monitoring."

Elena’s eyes scanned the bank of twelve screens. Her sharp, detail-oriented brain was analyzing patterns that Marco’s tactical training overlooked.

"Stop screen four," Elena commanded suddenly, her hand snapping out to touch the monitor.

Marco paused the feed. "What is it? Just fog near the cypress driveway."

"Look at the birds," Elena said, pointing to the top corner of the screen. "The crows in the third cypress tree aren't resting. They’ve been circling the outer gate for five minutes. Birds don't circle in heavy fog unless something is disturbing the high branches."

Marco pulled out his radio instantly. "Post Two, this is Bellini. Check the outer gate perimeter."

Static.

"Post Two, respond."

Static.

Marco’s face drained of color. "Code Black."

Before he could hit the main alarm button, a massive explosion shook the foundation of Villa Moretti.

BOOM!

The glass in the security room rattled violently. Screen four exploded into static as the outer iron gates were blown inward by a commercial-grade breaching charge.

Sirens immediately began to wail across the estate—a loud, piercing howl that tore through the quiet afternoon.

"Stay here!" Marco barked at Elena, pulling his heavy semi-automatic pistol from his holster.

"No!" Elena snapped, grabbing a heavy tactical tablet from the console. "They cleared Post Two, which means they are coming up the main drive! I can switch the automatic security shutters from this tablet! Go to the courtyard!"

Marco stared at her for a second, then nodded grimly. "Don't leave this room!" He sprinted out into the hallway, his boots pounding against the tile.

Elena didn't panic. Her heart was beating like a sledgehammer, but her mind was crystal clear.

She tapped the screen of her tablet, instantly activating the estate’s heavy steel security shutters. Across the mansion, thick reinforced panels slid down over the windows of the grand foyer, protecting the house from sniper fire.

On screen six, she saw three black unplated SUVs tear through the destroyed iron gates, speeding up the cypress-lined driveway toward the main portico.

Dante Moretti stepped out onto the marble portico, flanked by six enforcers armed with automatic rifles. He wore no jacket, his shirt sleeves rolled up, a heavy assault rifle held firmly in his dark hands. He looked like an ancient war god defending his castle.

RAT-TAT-TAT-TAT!

Gunfire erupted across the courtyard.

The Vitali mercenaries jumped out of their vehicles, taking cover behind the marble pillars, returning fire with automatic weapons. Glass shattered, stone chipped, and the peaceful garden party estate transformed into a bloody war zone within forty seconds.

Elena watched the feed on screen six.

She saw Dante firing with deadly, terrifying precision, dropping two mercenaries instantly. But then she noticed a fourth vehicle—a smaller, faster motorcycle—cut through the secondary garden path near the service entrance.

The rider was carrying a heavy satchel—a incendiary bomb designed to burn the service wing and cut off the mansion’s power grid.

"They're bypassing the main defense," Elena whispered in horror.

She looked at the security console. She had no gun. She had no combat training.

What she had was absolute knowledge of Villa Moretti’s architectural layout.

Elena grabbed a heavy iron fire extinguisher from the wall, slammed the security room door open, and ran into the subterranean service corridor.

She ran as fast as her powerful legs could carry her, her heavy boots pounding against the concrete floor. She knew every shortcut, every hidden door, every service hatch.

She reached the service entrance exit just as the motorcycle rider kicked open the wooden door, pulling a glass incendiary device from his satchel, lighter in hand.

He didn't see her. He was focused on the electrical junction box on the wall.

Elena didn't hesitate. She didn't yell a warning.

She swung the heavy iron fire extinguisher with all the strength in her broad shoulders and full upper body, slamming it directly into the side of the mercenary’s helmet.

CRACK!

The impact sounded like a baseball bat hitting a watermelon.

The rider flew sideways, crashing hard into the brick wall, dropping the incendiary device onto the concrete floor. He collapsed into an unconscious heap, his helmet cracked wide open.

Elena stood over him, panting heavily, her chest rising and falling, holding the dented fire extinguisher like a war club.

She reached down, picked up the incendiary device, carefully disarmed the chemical fuse, and tossed it into a bucket of water nearby.

Outside, the gunfire began to die down.

Dante’s enforcers, utilizing superior tactical positioning and heavy weaponry, had wiped out the mercenary team within six minutes.

The heavy wooden doors of the service entrance burst open.

Dante Moretti charged into the corridor, his rifle raised, his face covered in gunsmoke and blood from a minor stone graze on his cheek.

He saw the unconscious mercenary on the floor. He saw the iron fire extinguisher in Elena’s hands.

Dante stopped dead in his tracks.

He lowered his rifle slowly. He looked at the fallen enemy, then at Elena, who was standing tall, dripping with sweat, her hair wild, her dark eyes burning with fierce, victorious energy.

Dante tossed his rifle to a guard behind him.

He walked up to Elena, wrapped his large hands around her face, pulled her close, and kissed her with a fierce, violent passion that consumed every remaining second of the bloody afternoon.
