Chapter 5 - The Shattered Mirror

The silence that followed Evelyn’s statement was so absolute that the sound of a rain drop hitting the exterior windowpane sounded like a gunshot.

Christopher stared at his mother. His eyes were wide, vacant, entirely uncomprehending.

"What... what are you talking about?" he whispered, taking a slow step backward until his calves hit the edge of the velvet sofa. "That's a lie. That's a sick lie! You're saying this because you hate Michelle! You've always hated her!"

"I have the medical records from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester dated May 14, 2001, Christopher," Evelyn said, her voice flat, unyielding, and totally devoid of warmth. "Your father and I paid three hundred thousand dollars to keep those records sealed in a private family trust. We never told you because your father wanted you to grow up feeling like a whole man. We intended to guide you toward private, anonymous adoption when you married."

Christopher’s face turned from red to a terrifying, paper-white pale. He turned slowly to face Michelle.

Michelle was curled into a ball on the sofa, her shoulders shaking with violent, silent sobs, her face buried entirely in her hands.

"Michelle?" Christopher asked. His voice was no longer that of a confident corporate executive. It sounded like the voice of a confused seven-year-old child lost in a dark forest. "Michelle, look at me. What is she talking about?"

Michelle didn't look up. She couldn't.

I stepped forward, opening the leather folder I had carried into the house. I pulled out a set of six printed documents—the laboratory transfer receipts from the Genevieve Clinic's storage vault in Tucson.

"She didn't use an anonymous donor bank, Christopher," I said, setting the papers down on the mahogany coffee table in front of him.

Christopher dropped to his knees on the rug. His hands shook as he picked up the pages.

"These are the withdrawal logs from Vault 4-B," I explained calmly. "Vault 4-B doesn't belong to the clinic. It is a private, paid cryogenic repository owned exclusively by the Lawson Family Estate."

Christopher’s eyes scanned the names on the log.

Depositor: Julian Lawson. Date of Original Storage: September 12, 2018. Authorized Access Representative: Richard Vance.

Christopher slowly raised his head. His eyes moved across the room until they landed on his cousin, Julian Lawson—the thirty-eight-year-old vice president of Lawson Holdings, who was still standing by the floor-to-ceiling glass windows holding a glass of champagne.

Julian’s face had gone completely gray.

He dropped his champagne glass. It shattered against the hard saltillo tile floor, sending sparkling crystal shards and foaming wine across the rug.

"Julian?" Christopher gasped, his breath coming in short, ragged wheezes. "Julian... what did you do?"

Julian didn't answer. He turned sharply toward the double doors, intending to bolt from the room.

"Don't bother, Julian," Evelyn’s voice rang out like a whip. "My security detail is standing in the foyer. The gates are locked."

Julian stopped in his tracks. He turned around, his handsome face twisting into a bitter, defensive scowl.

"He was destroying the family name, Evelyn!" Julian yelled, pointing a finger at Christopher. "He was running Vextor Dynamics into the ground! He was spending millions on failed fertility treatments with Victoria! He was going to leave the entire Lawson estate without a biological heir, and the board was preparing to liquidate our trust shares!"

"So you gave Michelle your semen?" Christopher screamed, lunging across the room toward his cousin.

Before Christopher could reach him, two of Evelyn's large security guards stepped through the doorway, easily grabbing Christopher by the arms and pinning him back against the marble fireplace.

"It was Richard's idea!" Julian shouted back, gesturing wildly. "Richard Vance knew Michelle had been sleeping with Christopher for a year! They needed a way to secure Christopher's estate before Victoria finished her corporate audit! They paid a technician at the Genevieve Clinic fifty thousand dollars to swap the donor straw during Michelle's third cycle!"

Julian looked at Christopher with raw, unadulterated contempt.

"You were never the mastermind, Chris! You were just the mark! They used my blood to give you the heir you wanted, so Michelle could claim half of your fortune in the divorce!"

Christopher turned back to Michelle.

She was cowering on the velvet sofa, weeping hysterically, unable to meet his eyes.

"You knew?" Christopher choked out, his voice breaking entirely. "The whole time... you knew?"

"I had to, Chris!" Michelle sobbed, raising her tear-stained face. "You kept saying you were going to leave Victoria, but you never did! Richard said if I didn't have a child—a real Lawson heir—your mother would never let you marry me! I did it for us! I did it so we could be a family!"

"A family?" Christopher echoed. He let out a strange, high-pitched laugh that sounded completely insane. "You gave me my cousin's babies!"

I stood silently beside Evelyn, watching the collapse of the men and women who had spent years trying to make me feel small.

There were no grand speeches left to give. No dramatic accusations. The truth had done what truth always does when left under the light: it had stripped away every single lie until nothing was left but the dry, rotten bone beneath.
