Chapter 5 - The Collapse of an Empire

The silence in the executive office was so absolute that the low hum of the ceiling vents sounded like a distant jet engine.
Cole Bennett looked down at his shaking hands, then up at Sloane, who was now backing away toward the door like a cornered animal. All the grand architecture of his life—the multimillion-dollar valuation, the sleek glass office tower, the glamorous mistress, the triumphant narrative of a man casting off his old life to build a brilliant new dynasty—was dissolving into a puddle of sordid, pathetic lies.
"You lied to me," Cole whispered, his voice cracking with a child-like disbelief. "The contractions... the nursery designs... the ultrasound appointments... you faked all of it?"
Sloane sneer twisted her features into something ugly. "What was I supposed to do, Cole? You were weak. You felt guilty every time you looked at Claire. If I didn't lock you down with a baby, you would have gone back to her the moment things got hard at the firm! You're a coward who needed an excuse to burn your old life down so you wouldn't have to admit you were bored!"
Cole lunged forward, a blind, animal rage overriding his panic, but Marcus Reed intercepted him with a single, effortless hand against Cole’s chest, pushing him back into his chair.
"Sit down, Mr. Bennett," Marcus said quietly. "Violence won't fix your balance sheet."
Claire stood by the desk, looking down at her former husband with an expression that hurt him more than any punch could have: absolute, pitying indifference.
"You traded your wife, your child, and your integrity for a phantom, Cole," Claire said, her voice like ice water. "You wanted a dynasty, but you didn't want to do the work to build it. You wanted someone who would clap at your presentations and never challenge your ego."
She reached down, picked up the patent assignment form, and slid it back into her briefcase.
"My lawyers will file the injunction against Bennett Biomedical's Series B round by 2:00 PM," Claire continued, snapping the brass latches shut. "By tomorrow morning, your venture capital backers will receive a full forensic audit of the company's IP structure and executive misconduct filings. By next week, the board will vote to oust you as CEO for gross fiduciary negligence."
Cole buried his face in his hands, dry, wracking sobs tearing from his chest. "Claire... please. Please. I was stupid. I was blind. I lost our baby... I lost everything. We can fix this. We built this company together—"
"We did build it together," Claire said, turning toward the door. "And now I am going to take my half back, brick by brick, until there is nothing left of Bennett Biomedical but a bad memory."
She paused at the door, glancing back over her shoulder one last time.
"Oh, and Cole?"
He didn't look up, his shoulders shaking beneath his expensive suit jacket.
"Sloane didn't just fake a pregnancy," Claire added softly. "She cleared out your personal investment account in the Cayman Islands yesterday morning. The transfer went through at 9:00 AM. She’s flying to Zurich on a one-way ticket tonight."
Cole whipped his head up, staring at Sloane with bulging eyes. "You... you took my money?"
May you like
Sloane laughed—a shrill, desperate sound—as she ripped open the heavy office door. "Consider it a consulting fee for teaching you what you deserve!"
Then she bolted down the hallway, leaving Cole alone in the wreckage of his empire.
