Chapter 7 - The Final Account

By dawn, the storm had passed, leaving New York blanketed in a pristine, blinding sheet of white snow. The fire at the Brooklyn salvage yard had been extinguished, leaving behind nothing but charred steel and ashes.

Salvatore Valenti was locked in a soundproof cellar beneath my Manhattan estate. He had spent the last three hours begging for mercy, offering money, territory, and political connections.

I entered the cellar accompanied by Elena Vance.

Valenti was tied to a chair, his face bruised, his expensive suit ruined. When he saw Elena walk in beside me, clean, safe, and holding a cup of hot coffee, his mouth fell open.

"You..." Valenti gasped, his voice raspy. "You brought her here to watch me die?"

"No," I said, leaning against the cold stone wall. "She's here to audit you."

Elena stepped forward, setting a laptop on a small wooden table in front of him. She opened the screen, revealing a series of live bank transfer interfaces.

"Your offshore accounts in Zurich and Panama hold roughly eighty-four million dollars, Salvatore," Elena said, her voice completely devoid of fear. "Using the security codes my team extracted from your safe this morning, I am currently transferring every single cent out of your name."

"You can't do that!" Valenti roared, straining against his bonds. "That's my life's work!"

"Forty million is going to a trust fund for the victims of your trafficking network," Elena continued calmly, tapping the keys with practiced precision. "Ten million is going to rehabilitate the port workers your enforcers injured. And the rest..." She looked at me.

"The rest goes to a permanent educational trust for Emma," I said smoothly. "Consider it a scholarship from the Valenti family."

Valenti's eyes burned with hatred. "You're a hypocrite, Moretti! You're a monster just like me!"

"I am a monster, Salvatore," I agreed, walking over and looking down into his eyes. "But I am a monster with standards. I build an empire to protect my people. You built yours to feed your gluttony. That is why I am standing here, and why you are about to disappear."

I signaled to Marco.

"Take him to the harbor," I ordered quietly. "Make sure the water is cold."

As Marco dragged the screaming former Don out of the cellar, Elena closed the laptop. She looked at me, a deep sense of relief washing over her face for the first time since this nightmare began.

"It's over?" she asked softly.

"It's over," I replied. "Valenti's organization is gone. The evidence against his political allies has been delivered anonymously to the Federal Prosecutor's office. You and Emma are completely safe."

She buried her face in her hands and let out a long, shuddering breath. "I don't know how to thank you, Mr. Moretti."

"You already have," I said, walking toward the stairs. "You gave me a reason to clean up my city."
