Chapter 8 - The Price of Loyalty

A shot rang through the ballroom, but it wasn't Julian's gun that fired.
A sharp sniper round fired from an officer positioned on the upper mezzanine struck Julian’s wrist, sending his chrome pistol flying across the polished floorboards.
Julian collapsed to his knees, clutching his bleeding hand, sobbing in sheer defeat.
State troopers swarmed the stage, pinning Julian to the floor and snapping steel cuffs around his wrists.
The Chief of Police, realization dawning on him that his own career was effectively over if he didn't cooperate, stepped forward immediately. "Vincent Raldi... we received the files you transmitted to the federal prosecutor's office twenty minutes ago. The Raldi Syndicate's illegal operations are officially shut down."
Vincent turned to the Chief, his expression unyielding. "The illegal operations are finished, Chief. But Raldi Enterprises remains intact. And effective immediately, its assets are being redirected."
He reached out his hand toward Delaney, beckoning her up onto the stage beside him.
Delaney took a breath and stepped up the stairs, standing under the blinding light of the spotlights before five hundred of the wealthiest people in the city.
Vincent took the microphone from the podium.
"For years, my family allowed greed to corrupt our responsibilities to this city," Vincent announced, his voice echoing with absolute authority. "We destroyed neighborhoods. We pushed out families. We built luxury towers on the ashes of hard-working homes."
He looked directly at Delaney, his grey eyes softening with profound respect.
"This young woman—Delaney Mercer—saved my life when she had every reason to let me perish. She reminded me of who we were supposed to be. Therefore, as sole controlling shareholder of Raldi Enterprises, I am transferring forty percent of the waterfront development land into a perpetual public trust."

The room gasped.
"Larkin Row will not be turned into luxury casinos," Vincent declared. "It will be rebuilt into affordable housing, medical clinics, and a free community center named in honor of Delaney’s mother, Mary Mercer."
