Chapter 5 - The Night of the Storm

By 9:00 PM, a violent thunderstorm was raging over Chicago. Rain lashed against the high windows of the estate, and lightning illuminated the dark forest outside in sharp, brilliant flashes.

upstairs in the master suite, the scene was entirely different.

The room was warm, soft, and filled with the gentle light of bedside lamps. Lila was tucked into a massive king-sized bed wrapped in silk sheets, wearing soft pink pajamas that Mrs. Gable’s tailors had brought.

A large plush teddy bear was tucked under her arm.

I sat on the edge of the bed, holding a children's storybook that I had pulled from the library downstairs. I had never read a bedtime story in my life. I had negotiated multi-million dollar cartel deals, ordered assassinations, and managed hundreds of men, but holding that simple picture book made my hands sweat.

"And then," I read slowly, trying to soften my deep voice as much as possible, "the little bear found his way back to the forest, where his family was waiting for him."

Lila looked up at me, her eyelids growing heavy. "Did the little bear stay safe?"

"Yes," I said, leaning down to smooth her soft hair. "He stayed safe forever. Because his father built a big fence around the forest."

Lila let out a tiny, contented sigh, her small hand reaching out from under the blanket to wrap around my index finger. "I'm glad you're my daddy."

My heart swelled with a feeling so profound, so intense, that it terrified me far more than any enemy ever could.

"I love you, Lila," I whispered, pressing a soft kiss to her forehead. "Go to sleep. I'll be right outside."

She closed her eyes, her breathing slowing down into a soft, steady rhythm within minutes.

I gently eased my finger out of her grip, stood up, and stepped out onto the quiet carpet of the hallway.

Frankie was waiting for me at the end of the corridor, wearing a tactical vest beneath his dark coat, holding two encrypted radios.

"Vance took the ledger," Frankie reported in a low whisper. "Federal warrants are being signed right now. By midnight, half the police board and twelve judges are going to be in handcuffs. The Valetti family has lost all their legal protection."

"Where is Dominic?" I asked, unbuttoning my dress shirt sleeves and rolling them up to my elbows.

"He retreated to their main compound in Cicero," Frankie replied. "He's gathered about thirty of his heavy hitters. They know the feds are coming, and they know you're coming. They're barricaded inside."

"Thirty men?" I asked coldly.

May you like

"Yes, boss."

"Bring fifty," I said, pulling my custom nickel-plated Colt .45 from my desk drawer. "We finish this tonight."
