Chapter 9 - The Autumn Gala

By mid-November, the Delgado estate was preparing for an event that had not taken place since Victoria’s passing: the annual Delgado Foundation Charity Gala.

Historically, the gala was a massive high-society event hosted at the estate to raise millions for pediatric medical research—a foundation that Victoria had personally managed and championed. In the months following her death, the board had assumed the event would be canceled or moved to a corporate hotel downtown. But two weeks prior, Marcus had personally instructed his event coordinators that the gala would proceed at the mansion, just as Victoria had always intended.

On the evening of the gala, the estate was transformed. Hundreds of warm golden fairy lights hung from the oak trees lining the driveway. The main terrace was enclosed in a clear, heated glass marquee overlooking the lit garden, and the air was filled with the classical melodies of a live string quartet.

Dozens of the city's elite—corporate executives, philanthropists, politicians, and media figures—filled the grand living spaces, dressed in tuxedos and evening gowns.

In the master suite on the third floor, Marcus was adjusting his black bow tie in the mirror. He looked composed, elegant, and commanding, but his thoughts were far from the business negotiations waiting for him downstairs.

A knock sounded at his dressing room door.

"Come in," Marcus called out.

The door opened, and Pia stepped inside. She was dressed in a simple, floor-length dark emerald gown—a dress she had purchased specifically for the evening, elegant without being flash. Her hair was styled in soft waves that framed her face, and she wore a thin gold chain around her neck.

Marcus stopped adjusting his tie. He stared at her, genuinely caught off guard by how stunning she looked outside her daily work attire.

"Ben is fast asleep downstairs in the private nursery wing," Pia said, offering a slight, hesitant smile as she noticed his gaze. "Maria is sitting with him. I wanted to make sure everything was set before I took my leave for the evening."

"You're not leaving," Marcus said, stepping forward.

Pia blinked. "Marcus, this is an executive foundation event. I am your son's nanny. It wouldn't be appropriate for me to attend as a guest."

"You are the reason this foundation is still standing," Marcus said firmly. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small velvet box. He opened it, revealing a delicate vintage brooch made of white gold and sapphire—an item from Victoria's private collection.

Pia stepped back slightly, shaking her head. "Marcus, no. I can't accept that. That was Victoria's."

"Victoria would have wanted you to have it," Marcus said, his voice dropping into a gentle, earnest tone. "She cared about people who had heart, Pia. She hated the hollow pretense of events like this. You brought light back to our son. You brought light back to me. Wearing this isn't about property—it's about honor."

He took the brooch from the box, stepping closer to her. "May I?"

Pia looked at the shimmering blue sapphire, then up into Marcus’s clear, sincere eyes. She took a quiet breath and nodded softly. "Yes."

Marcus stepped close, his hands steady as he pinned the delicate white-gold brooch to the lapel of her emerald dress. His fingers brushed against the soft fabric near her collarbone, sending a sudden, palpable current of electricity through them both.

He looked up, finding her eyes just inches from his own. For a long, breathless moment, neither of them moved. The distant sound of the string quartet playing downstairs seemed to fade away, leaving only the quiet, intense space between them.

"Marcus," she whispered, her voice carrying a delicate, trembling question.

"I know," Marcus replied softly, his thumb gently brushing against her cheekbone—a touch so light, so full of tenderness, that it made Pia close her eyes for a fraction of a second. "I know."

Before the moment could overwhelm them, a knock at the outer door broke the spell. Marcus's chief operations officer called out from the hallway: "Marcus, the board members are arriving. They're requesting you downstairs for the opening remarks."

Marcus stepped back slowly, taking a deep breath, restoring his professional posture, though his eyes never left Pia's face.

"Walk down with me," Marcus offered, holding out his arm.

Pia looked at his offered arm, offered a breathtaking smile, and slid her hand into the crook of his elbow. "It would be my pleasure, Mr. Delgado."

Together, they walked down the floating oak staircase into the bustling, light-filled grand room.

As they descended, dozens of guests turned to look at them. Whispers swept through the high-society crowd—surprised murmurs about the sudden return of Marcus Delgado's strength, and curiosity regarding the elegant, unknown woman walking by his side, wearing Victoria's sapphire brooch.

Marcus ignored the whispers entirely. He held his head high, walking through his home not as a grieving recluse hiding behind security monitors, but as a man who had reclaimed his life, his family, and his future.
