Chapter 9 - The Final Reckoning

The safe room was a massive steel-lined vault hidden beneath the wine cellar. Vance shoved Norah inside, closed the foot-thick steel door, and engaged the electronic locking bolts from the inside.

For two agonizing hours, Norah sat on a leather bench in total silence, listening to the muffled thuds of explosions and gunfire echoing faintly through the concrete ceiling.

She clutched her small box cutter in her hand, her knuckles white, her breath shallow.

She realized then, with terrifying clarity, that she didn't just care about her own survival anymore. She cared about the man fighting above. She had fallen in love with Julian Vance—the cold, dangerous mafia boss who had treated her with more honor and dignity than anyone she had ever known.

At 2:45 a.m., the vault lock hummed.

The heavy steel bolts slid back with a loud, mechanical click. The heavy door swung open slowly.

Standing in the doorway was Julian.

He was covered in ash, sweat, and blood. His shirt was torn, his knuckles bruised, and his pistol hung loosely in his right hand. Beside his leg stood Brutus, his snout stained red, panting heavily but unharmed.

Julian looked into the vault. His dark eyes met Norah's.

"It's over," Julian said rasply.

Norah dropped her box cutter onto the floor, sprinted across the concrete room, and threw her arms around his neck.

Julian let out a sharp gasp as her weight collided with his chest, but he wrapped his arms tightly around her waist, lifting her off her feet, pressing his face into the crook of her neck. He held her as if she were the only real thing left in a world made of blood and glass.

"Victor Cruz is dead," Julian whispered into her hair, his chest heaving. "His organization is gone. My home is secure."

He pulled back slightly, his hands framing her face, his thumb gently wiping away a tear that had slipped down her cheek.

"You don't ever have to run again, Norah," he said softly, his voice trembling with an emotion he had never allowed himself to feel before. "You don't have to live in fear. You don't have to go back to that old life."

Norah looked into his dark, fierce eyes, feeling the steady, powerful beat of his heart against her palm.

"I'm not going anywhere, Julian," she whispered. "I'm staying right here."

Julian leaned down and pressed his lips to hers in a deep, fierce, desperate kiss that tasted of rain, copper, and absolute victory.
