Chapter 10 - The Promise Kept

That evening, the three of us stood on the private wooden pier behind our new home in Bar Harbor, Maine.

The ocean waves crashed gently against the rocky shoreline below, casting a cool, salty mist into the air as the sunset painted the sky in brilliant hues of violet, orange, and gold.

Maya was running down the sandy beach with our new golden retriever pup, her joyful laughter echoing across the water.

Emily stood beside me, leaning her head against my shoulder as my arm wrapped securely around her waist. She wore a soft wool cardigan, her dark hair blowing gently in the sea breeze.

On her left hand, catching the last golden rays of the setting sun, was the gold ring.

I had taken it to a master jeweler in Manhattan two weeks prior. He had cleaned off nine years of dirt and wear, polishing the gold until it gleamed like new, and engraved three new letters right beside the old ones:

V.M. & E.V. & M.

“What are you thinking about?” Emily asked softly, turning her head to look up at me.

“I’m thinking about the storm in Manhattan,” I answered, smiling down at her. “I’m thinking about how a six-year-old girl walked into a skyscraper with a cold coat and a wet shoe... and gave me back my soul.”

Emily smiled, tears of pure happiness shimmering in her eyes. She reached up, touching my cheek with her soft hand.

“She got her courage from her father,” Emily whispered.

“And her heart from her mother,” I replied gently.

I pulled her closer, pressing my lips to hers in a slow, lingering kiss that tasted of ocean air, fresh beginnings, and a love that had survived the storm.
