Chapter 7 - The Drake Hotel

At 8:45 PM, the heavy mahogany doors of Room 714 at the historic Drake Hotel were kicked inward with terrifying force.
The lock mechanism shattered, sending wood splinters raining across the plush oriental rug of the luxury suite.
Inside, a tall, slender man in his late forties wearing a silk bathrobe sprang up from the velvet sofa. His hand shot toward a silenced Walther PPK resting on the glass coffee table.
He was too slow.
Dominic Vance crossed the room in two strides, his heavy leather-gloved hand grabbing the man’s wrist, twisting it violently until the bone snapped with a loud, wet CRACK.
The man let out a strangled scream, falling to his knees as the silenced pistol clattered harmlessly onto the rug.
Dominic shoved his knee into the man’s back, pinning him face-down against the floorboards, pulling his arms behind his back and securing them with heavy industrial zip-ties.
I walked into the suite, taking off my wet leather gloves, and looked down at the man known as "The Barber."
Beside the coffee table sat an open aluminum briefcase. Inside were six pre-filled syringes containing clear liquid, a high-frequency radio jammer, three forged passports, and $100,000 in wrapped fifty-dollar bills.
"Clean setup," I remarked, kicking the briefcase shut with the toe of my shoe. "Professional. Unobtrusive."
The Barber groaned into the carpet, his face twisted in agonizing pain from his broken wrist. "Who... who the hell are you?"
I pulled a single photograph from my coat pocket and dropped it onto the floor three inches from his nose.
It was a picture of Lily Bennett, holding her single-eyed stuffed rabbit, smiling as she sat on the kitchen counter at my estate.
"You were going to poison a three-year-old child for a hundred grand," I said, my voice dropping into a register so dark, so cold, that even Dominic took a half-step back.
The Barber stared at the photograph, his breathing shallow and rapid. "It... it was just a job, man! Kane paid the contract! I don't know the kid! I didn't know who she was!"
"Her name is Lily," I told him, crouching down beside his head. "And her mother is alive. The paralytic you used didn't work, my friend. Michael Grant flushed it out of her system four hours ago."
The man's eyes widened in sheer, unadulterated horror. "No... that dose was lethal... it was supposed to stop her heart in twenty minutes..."
"You bought cheap chemicals," Dominic growled, pressing his boot harder into the man’s spine.
I reached down, pulled the man’s cell phone from his bathrobe pocket, and held it up to his face to unlock it with facial recognition.
I opened his contacts, scrolled to the top, and pressed the number listed under V. KANE.
I put the call on speaker.
It rang twice.
"Is it done?" Victor Kane’s voice echoed clearly through the quiet hotel room. He sounded relaxed, the clinking of a whiskey glass audible in the background. "Did the housekeeper go quietly?"
I held the phone close to my mouth.
"She’s fine, Victor," I said smoothly. "And so is her daughter."
A dead, heavy silence descended upon the line. The clinking of the whiskey glass stopped instantly.
"Adrian?" Victor whispered, his voice suddenly losing all its smooth, aristocratic polish.
"You have one hour, Victor," I told him quietly. "Get your legal documents, your passport, and whatever dignity you have left. Come to Warehouse Four on Bennett Street. If you aren't there by 10:00 PM, I will release the original land grant deed, Thomas Miller’s recorded confession, and your assassin’s equipment to the United States Attorney’s Office."
"Adrian... listen to me!" Victor stammered, his breath rattling through the phone speaker. "We can talk about this! Your father... Carmine and I had an agreement! The Moretti family took fifty percent of those profits for twenty years!"
"My father is dead, Victor," I said, my thumb hovering over the red disconnect button. "And I don't make deals with men who target children."
I ended the call, tossed the phone onto the sofa, and looked up at Dominic.

"Package him up," I ordered, gesturing toward The Barber. "Deliver him directly to the federal marshals waiting outside Citadel Tower."
"Yes, Mr. Moretti."
