Chapter 8 - The Price of Redemption

"You don't love me, Julian," I said, stepping back so his muddy fingers brushed against empty air. "You love the way I made you feel. You loved the comfort of having a loyal wife at home while you played the king of San Francisco."

Julian bowed his head against his knees, his shoulders shaking as he sobbed into the wet grass.

"The divorce was finalized this morning, Julian," I revealed, pulling a folded court document from my coat pocket and laying it gently on a clean bench near the pathway. "The judge signed the decree. The Vance trust has bought out your remaining personal shares at market value to ensure you are fully severed from the firm."

Julian didn't raise his head. "I don't want the money..."

"Take it," I advised coldly. "You'll need it. The SEC launched a formal inquiry into your off-book transfers yesterday afternoon. You will need every penny for your defense attorneys."

Julian looked up, his dark eyes filled with absolute horror and despair.

"You gave everything away for six days of vanity, Julian," I said, looking at him one last time. "You traded your son, your marriage, and your dignity for 144 hours in Napa. I hope it was worth it."

I turned my back on him and walked toward the waiting black car parked at the cemetery gates.

"Evelyn! EVELYN!" Julian screamed behind me, his voice echoing through the silent tombstones, drowning in the grey rain. "DON'T LEAVE ME! PLEASE!"

I didn't stop. I didn't look back.

I opened the car door, stepped inside the warm leather cabin, and closed the door softly, shutting out his cries completely.
