Chapter 10 - The Dawn on the Lake

The wooden cabin sat on a high pine ridge overlooking the crystal-clear waters of Lake Sebago in southern Maine.

The air smelled of fresh pine, crisp mountain air, and burning cedar logs from the stone fireplace inside.

It was six o'clock on a Sunday morning. The lake was as smooth as glass, reflecting the pink and gold hues of the rising sun across its calm surface.

Victor stood on the wide wooden porch, holding a steaming mug of black coffee. He wore a heavy wool sweater and worn denim, his posture relaxed, his face peaceful in the cool morning air.

The screen door behind him creaked softly.

Grace stepped out onto the porch, wrapped in a thick fleece blanket, her hair tousled from sleep, holding her own mug of tea. She walked over to the wooden railing, leaning against his shoulder, looking out at the sun breaking over the distant pine trees.

“It’s beautiful, Dad,” she murmured softly.

“It always was,” Victor replied gently, resting his hand over her head, smoothing her dark hair. “It just waited for us to come back.”

Down near the dock, Roy Hanlon was untying the lines of a small wooden motorboat, preparing it for a morning fishing trip across the bay.

They stood together in silence for a long time, watching the morning light chase away the last lingering shadows from the water below.

There were no phone calls from mob captains. No court summonses from prosecutors. No threats from New York enforcers. The past had been paid for in full, dismantled with ruthless precision, and replaced by an unbreakable sanctuary built on love, dignity, and absolute protection.

Victor Marlowe had entered Redstone as Boston’s most feared crime lord. He had walked out as a broken father seeking justice.

And here, on the quiet shores of Maine, under the rising sun of a new beginning, he was simply a father holding his child safe in his arms.

“Dad?” Grace whispered softly, looking up into his face.

“Yes, Gracie?”

“Thank you for coming back for me.”

May you like

Victor pulled her close, kissing her forehead gently as the golden sunlight washed over them both.

“I would have walked through hell a thousand times, Gracie,” Victor promised, his voice filled with an infinite, eternal warmth. “I will always come back for you.”
