Chapter 10 - The Horizon Ahead

One year later.

The morning sun broke over Lake Washington, casting long golden rays through the leaded-glass windows of the grand foyer.

One-year-old Gabriel was walking now—taking small, determined, wobbly steps across the white marble floor, his small leather shoes clicking happily against the tile as he chased a bright red rolling ball.

"Slow down, little captain!" Julianna laughed, walking behind him with her hands ready to catch him if he tumbled.

I stood near the front console table, wearing a crisp navy linen blouse and dark trousers, holding my briefcase and a fresh mug of dark coffee.

Maya Chen walked through the front doors, carrying a tablet computer and a stack of new development plans for the foundation's expansion into Oregon and California.

"Morning, Claire," Maya said, handing me a coffee refill with a brilliant smile. "The board meeting is set for ten o'clock. The city council just approved the zoning permits for the new children's medical center in Bellevue."

"Fantastic," I smiled, bending down to scoop Gabriel into my arms as he reached my knees. I lifted him high into the air, making him burst into a loud, joyous laugh that filled the soaring archways of the house.

I walked out onto the stone front steps, holding my son close against my hip, looking out over the sprawling green estate, the iron gates standing open wide beneath the clear morning sky.

I thought back to the night my husband died, the afternoon my water broke on the cold tile, and the desperate, greedy men who believed they could break my spirit with fake documents and threats of violence.

They had thought I was weak because I was grieving.

They had thought I was helpless because I was kneeling.

They hadn't realized that the quiet woman standing in the storm was the one holding the keys to the entire kingdom.

I kissed my son’s dark hair, holding him tight as the warm morning sun washed over us both.

"Come on, Gabriel," I whispered softly, turning to walk back inside the warm, light-filled hall of our home. "We have a world to build."
