Chapter 9 - The First Steps

Four months later.
The grand living room of the Moretti estate was filled with brilliant winter sunlight pouring through the floor-to-ceiling windows.
It was a Saturday morning, and the house was buzzing with life.
Nine-year-old Leo and seven-year-old Julian were sitting on the rug playing a game of chess—a game James insisted they learn to sharpen their strategic minds. Four-year-old Mateo was lying on his stomach nearby, intensely focused on building a tall tower out of wooden blocks.
I sat on the velvet sofa, sipping a warm cup of coffee, watching James, who was sitting on the opposite end of the rug, three feet away from fifteen-month-old Elena.
Elena was wearing a small pink sweater, grey cotton leggings, and tiny white leather walking shoes. She was sitting on her bottom, holding a plush brown teddy bear, looking around the room with wide, sparkling dark eyes.
"Alright, little princess," James called out softly, clapping his hands together twice. "Come to Daddy."
Elena looked at James, her tiny face lighting up with a brilliant, toothy smile. She dropped her teddy bear onto the carpet.
She placed her small hands on the rug, pushed her legs under her, and wobbled up onto her two feet.
The entire living room went dead silent.
Leo paused mid-move with his knight suspended in the air. Julian turned his head slowly. Mateo stopped stacking his wooden blocks.
"Look!" Mateo whispered loudly, pointing a finger. "She's standing!"
"Shh!" Leo hissed protective warning. "Don't scare her!"
Elena stood on her two tiny feet, her little knees wobbling like jelly, her arms sticking straight out to her sides for balance like a tiny tightrope walker.
She took one small, hesitant step forward.
Thump.
She wobbled, but she didn't fall.
She took a second step. Then a third.
James sat completely still on the floor, holding his hands out six inches away from her, his heart in his throat, refusing to touch her so she could do it on her own, but ready to catch her if she stumbled for a fraction of a second.
"That's it, sweetie," James whispered, his voice trembling with sheer, unadulterated pride. "One more step. Come on."
Elena let out a loud, triumphant squeal, took two quick, clumsy strides forward, and collapsed forward right into her father's waiting, open arms.
James caught her effortlessly, pulling her small body against his chest, lifting her high into the air as the entire living room erupted into wild, joyful cheering.
"She walked!" Julian yelled, jumping up from the chess game. "Did you see that?! She took four steps!"
"She's a genius!" Leo declared proudly, rushing over to pat Elena’s little head.
"I helped her!" Mateo claimed loyally, running over to give his sister a hugs on her knees. "I showed her how to walk yesterday!"
James sat on the rug, holding Elena against his shoulder, laughing out loud—a bright, booming, joyful sound that filled every corner of the grand house.
Elena clutched her father's neck, giggling hysterically, her tiny hand patting James’s cheek as if approving of his performance.
I set my coffee cup down on the table, tears of pure, overwhelming happiness streaming down my cheeks as I walked over and sat down on the rug beside my husband and children.
James looked at me over Elena’s dark hair, his dark eyes filled with a love so deep and boundless it made my breath catch.
"Four steps," James whispered proudly to me. "Our girl took four steps."
May you like
"She's fast, James," I smiled, wiping my eyes. "You're going to have to run to keep up with her soon."
"I'll run to the ends of the earth for her, Claire," James answered quietly, pulling me into his side with his free arm, holding our entire world together on the rug.
