Chapter 10 - The Horizon

Spring 2027 arrived in Austin with a brilliant explosion of bluebonnets along the Texas highways.
On a warm Saturday morning in April, Marcus and Clara walked hand-in-hand through the grand entrance of the newly dedicated David & Clara Vance Rehabilitation Wing at St. David’s Medical Center.
The wide glass lobby was filled with state-of-the-art physical therapy equipment, specialized hydrotherapy pools, and bright, sunlit recovery rooms designed specifically for patients recovering from severe traumatic injuries.
At the center of the lobby, mounted on a sleek marble wall, was a bronze plaque bearing a portrait of David Vance alongside a simple inscription:
Dedicated to the strength of those who rise, the truth that breaks the dark, and the love that rebuilds what was broken.
Dr. Aris, Clara’s former surgeon, walked up to them holding a clipboard.
"It’s an incredible facility, Marcus," Dr. Aris said, shaking his hand warmly. "We've already admitted twelve patients this week who wouldn't have been able to afford this level of care otherwise."
"That’s why we built it, Doctor," Clara said, her voice full of warmth and strength.
After touring the wing, Marcus and Clara walked out onto the sunlit terrace overlooking the green hills of Austin. The air was soft, carrying the faint scent of blooming jasmine.
Clara looked down at her feet, then took three firm, confident steps forward without holding onto the handrail. She turned back to face Marcus, her face glowing under the spring sun.
"Look, Marcus," she said, her eyes shining with joy. "No limp."
Marcus walked over to her, taking both of her hands in his, lifting them to his lips just as he had done on the floor of his childhood home six months ago. But this time, there were no tears, no pain, and no fear.
"You are the strongest person I know, Clara Vance," Marcus said quietly.
May you like
"We did it together," Clara whispered, stepping into his arms, resting her head against his heart.
As the afternoon sun cast long, golden rays across the city, Marcus held his wife tightly. He looked out over the horizon, knowing that the shadows of the past were finally gone—replaced by the bright, unyielding promise of a future built on truth, dignity, and a love that could never be broken.
