Chapter 8 - The Confrontation

As the judge exited to his chambers, chaos erupted inside Courtroom 3B. Antonio’s attorneys frantically tried to speak to their client, but Antonio sat motionless, staring at the mahogany table in total defeat.
Vivienne Russo stood up from the gallery, glared furiously at Luca and Claire, and stormed out of the courtroom, her heels clicking loudly against the marble floor.
Teresa Ferraro slowly rose from her seat. She walked toward her son, her face aged ten years in the span of ten minutes.
"Luca..." Teresa whispered, her voice trembling. "How could you do this to your uncle? To our family?"
Luca looked at his mother. The anger he had carried all morning had faded, leaving behind only a profound, quiet clarity.
"Antonio did this to himself, Mother," Luca said gently. "He's been stealing from Dad’s legacy for three years. You knew he was pushing the Russo merger because he was broke, but you looked the other way because you wanted Vivienne as a daughter-in-law."
Teresa looked at Claire, who stood quietly beside Luca, her expression calm, dignified, and entirely unvindicative.
"You ruined everything today," Teresa said to Claire, though there was no strength left in her voice.
"No, Mrs. Ferraro," Claire replied softly, looking the older woman directly in the eye. "I just stopped playing a game where the rules were rigged against me. Your son didn't choose me over your family today. He chose truth over a lie."
Teresa blinked back tears. She looked at Luca, then at Nora, who stood firmly behind her brother. For the first time in her life, Teresa Ferraro realized that the empire she had striven so hard to protect through fake smiles and corporate arrangements had completely fractured from the inside out.
Without another word, Teresa turned and walked out of the courtroom alone.
Luca turned to his sister, pulling her into a tight, fierce hug. "Thank you, Nora."
"I told you I had your back," Nora smiled, wiping a tear from her cheek. "Now get out of here. Both of you. The press is going to be outside in five minutes."
Luca took Claire's hand, leading her out through the judge's private side entrance to avoid the media circus gathering on the front steps.
They walked out into the cool evening air of Wakefield. The sun had set, leaving behind a brilliant crimson and violet sky over the New England coastline.
Marcus was waiting for them beside the Maserati, holding open the back door.
"Where to, boss?" Marcus asked with a subtle, respectful smile.
Luca looked at Claire.
May you like
"Back to the mill," Claire said quietly.
Luca smiled. "Back to the mill."
