Chapter 8 - The Reclaiming of Power

By eight o'clock the following morning, the sun was shining brightly over the Manhattan skyline.

I sat in the corner office of a glass-and-steel skyscraper in Midtown—the legal headquarters of Sterling & Associates.

Julian was sitting at the massive oak desk, reviewing the final transfer agreements on his computer screen. Marcus was on the phone with three major banking institutions, while Leo stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, drinking coffee from a paper cup.

The heavy double doors opened, and Arthur Vance walked in, accompanied by two personal attorneys.

Arthur looked ten years older than he had the night before. His suit was wrinkled, his eyes bloodshot, and his gait hesitant.

"Sit down, Arthur," Julian said without looking up from his screen.

Arthur sat in the leather chair across from Julian, his attorneys remaining standing behind him. "We reviewed the documents. The concrete reports... if those go to the Federal Prosecutor, Vance Construction goes under by the end of the week."

"Then you know what you have to sign," Julian said smoothly, sliding a three-page document across the desk.

Arthur picked up the pen, his hands shaking slightly. "What about Isaac?"

"Isaac has been removed from the board of directors," Marcus said, leaning against the wall. "His company car was repossessed at seven AM, his credit accounts have been frozen under corporate audit review, and he is currently being served with divorce papers at his hotel."

Arthur looked at me, sitting silently on the leather sofa near the window. "Flora... please. He was stupid. He made a terrible mistake. Talk to your brothers."

I leaned forward, resting my hands on my knees.

"Isaac didn't make a mistake, Arthur," I said, my voice steady and clear. "He made a choice. He chose to humiliate me. He chose to use violence because he thought I had no one to protect me. And you sat by the fireplace and let him do it."

Arthur swallowed hard, the last remnants of his aristocratic pride crumbling away.

He pressed the pen to the paper and signed his name at the bottom of the agreement.

With that signature, sixty percent of the controlling shares of Vance Construction were transferred directly into my name.

"Get out of my office, Arthur," Julian said quietly, gathering the papers into a neat stack.

Arthur stood up, looked at me one last time with a mixture of fear and regret, and walked out the door with his attorneys following behind him in absolute silence.
