Chapter 6 - The Escalation at the Office

When direct calls, family pressure, and doorstep intimidation failed, Ryan did what he always did when he was backed into a corner: he tried to destroy my professional reputation.
On Wednesday morning at 10:00 AM, I was sitting in a quarterly planning meeting with my agency's senior director, Arthur Vance (no relation to Julian), and four key corporate clients. We were discussing a three-million-dollar gala contract for the upcoming autumn season.
Suddenly, the glass door to the conference room was shoved open.
Ryan strode into the room, his face pale, his suit crumpled, his hair unwashed. He looked like a man who hadn't slept in three days. Behind him, our young front-desk receptionist was frantically trying to catch up to him.
"Sir! You can't go in there! That's a private meeting!" she called out, her face flushed with panic.
Ryan ignored her completely. He pointed a trembling finger directly at me from across the long mahogany conference table.
"There she is!" Ryan shouted, his voice echoing off the glass walls. "There's the cold-hearted psycho who ruins people's lives for fun!"
The four corporate clients turned around in their chairs, staring in utter shock. Arthur stood up slowly, his commanding six-foot-two frame instantly filling the room with authority.
"Excuse me," Arthur said, his voice dropping into a deep, dangerous rumble. "Who are you, and why are you barging into my executive board room?"
"I'm her brother!" Ryan yelled, stepping closer to the table, his eyes wide and wild. "And this woman—your 'star employee'—just sabotaged my forty-thousand-dollar wedding out of pure, malicious spite! She used her position in your company to manipulate venue contracts, cancel vendor orders, and steal tens of thousands of dollars in discounts from my family!"
I didn't flinch. I didn't stand up. I sat calmly in my leather chair, holding a sleek silver pen in my right hand, looking at my brother as if he were a mildly annoying insect buzzing against a windowpane.
"Ryan," I said quietly. "You are trespassing."
"Shut up!" he screamed, slamming his fist down on the glass credenza near the door. "Shut your mouth, Emily! You think you can hide behind your little corporate desk?! You ruined my life! Chloe left me last night! She packed her bags, moved back to her parents' house, and took her ring because the wedding is canceled! Do you hear me?! My fiancée left me because of you!"
A heavy, suffocating silence fell over the conference room.
Arthur looked at Ryan, then looked down at me. "Emily? Do you know this man?"
"He is my brother, Arthur," I said smoothly, standing up and smoothing down the front of my tailored grey suit jacket. "And he is currently committing criminal trespass, verbal harassment, and corporate disruption during an active client presentation."
I turned to the receptionist standing nervously in the doorway. "Sarah, please call building security and the police department immediately. Tell them we have an erratic, hostile intruder on the 14th floor who has laid hands on office property."
"On it!" Sarah said, instantly sprinting back toward the reception desk.
Ryan’s face flushed red, then instantly turned a sickly shade of white as the word police registered in his brain.
"You're calling the cops on me?!" he stammered, stepping back toward the door. "Your own brother?!"
"You entered a private corporate office without authorization, interrupted an executive meeting, and shouted defamatory lies about my professional conduct," I said, walking slowly around the conference table to stand beside Arthur. "You have thirty seconds to leave this building before security guards physically throw you into the street."
Ryan looked around the room. He looked at the four corporate clients, who were staring at him with looks of profound disgust and horror. He looked at Arthur, who looked like he was about to personally throw him out the window. And finally, he looked at me.
He didn't see the quiet, submissive sister who had catered his Thanksgiving dinners, planned his company parties, and swallowed his insults for twenty-seven years.
He saw an absolute stranger who held every single piece of power in the room.
"You're a monster, Emily," Ryan whispered, his voice trembling with a pathetic mix of rage and terror. "You ruined my family."
"You ruined your own wedding the moment you threw Sophie's cake in the garbage, Ryan," I replied coldly. "Now get out of my office."
Ryan took two erratic steps backward, turned around, and practically ran down the hallway toward the elevators just as two heavy-set building security guards stepped out into the lobby.
I turned back to the conference table, adjusted my papers, and looked at the four stunned clients with a warm, professional smile.
"I deeply apologize for that interruption, ladies and gentlemen," I said smoothly, pulling out my chair. "Now, let's get back to the lighting setup for the autumn gala. As I was saying..."

Arthur looked at me with deep, quiet respect, took his seat, and nodded. "Please continue, Emily."
The door closed, the meeting resumed, and Ryan’s last desperate attempt to destroy me evaporated into thin air.
