Chapter 3 - The Hospital Room

The waiting room at Northwestern Memorial Hospital was cold, quiet, and smelled heavily of antiseptic. It was 2:00 AM. Outside the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, the Chicago skyline was shrouded in a thick, rainy fog.
Daniel sat beside me, his fingers intertwined with mine. He hadn't left my side for a single second. Across the room sat Richard and Elaine. Elaine was weeping quietly into a tissue, while Richard paced back and forth like a caged animal, his phone permanently glued to his ear as he coordinated media blackouts with the Caldwell Enterprises PR team.
The double doors swung open, and a doctor in blue scrubs walked out, pulling his mask down.
"Family of Derek Caldwell?"
Elaine practically flew out of her seat. "Is he alive? Is my boy going to be okay?"
"He is stable," the doctor said cautiously, holding a clipboard. "We performed a gastric lavage and administered a broad-spectrum antidote. He is currently in the ICU, unconscious, but his heart rate has stabilized."
Elaine let out a watery sigh of relief, slumping against Richard.
"However," the doctor continued, his tone turning grave as he looked directly at Richard, "the toxicity screen from the glass residue provided by the paramedics confirmed a high concentration of Aconitine—a deadly neurotoxin derived from wolfsbane. In high doses, it causes severe arrhythmia, paralysis, and respiratory failure within thirty minutes."
Richard froze. "Aconitine?"
"It is an extremely restricted chemical," the doctor said sternly. "Because this involves an intentional ingestion or poisoning of a lethal substance, hospital protocol dictates that we report this to the Chicago Police Department. Detectives are already on their way."
Elaine gasped, looking instantly at me. "It was her! She poisoned him! She was always jealous of Derek! She wanted his share of the company!"
I stood up slowly, smoothing the skirt of my bridal gown, which was still stained with tiny flecks of champagne. "Mother, if I wanted Derek's share of the company, I wouldn't need to poison him. Grandfather already left me controlling interest. Derek was the one desperately trying to take it back."
"Shut up!" Elaine shrieked, taking a step toward me. "You viper! You ruined your own wedding just to hurt my son!"
"Enough, Elaine!" Daniel shouted, his powerful voice echoing through the quiet waiting room, making the doctor step back in surprise. "Your son tried to poison my wife tonight! Do you think we're stupid? Do you think Mara didn't see him slip that packet into her glass?"
The silence that followed was suffocating.
Richard stared at Daniel, then turned his gaze slowly toward me. The sheer coldness in my father's eyes was terrifying, but for the first time in my life, it had no power over me.
"You switched the glasses," Richard whispered, the truth finally dawning on him. "He tried to give it to you... and you swapped them."
"He raised his toast," I replied, my voice dropping into an icy register. "He looked me in the eye and told me his surprise was coming. I simply let him enjoy his own gift."
Before Richard could speak, the doors opened again, and two plainclothes detectives stepped into the room, their badges glinting under the harsh fluorescent lights.
"Richard Caldwell?" the lead detective asked. "I'm Detective Vance. We're here regarding the poisoning of Derek Caldwell. We need everyone to step into the conference room for individual statements."

I looked at my father, whose entire corporate empire, reputation, and family legacy were hanging by a thread.
"Lead the way, Detective," I said calmly. "I have a lot to tell you."
