Chapter 6 - The Unraveling

“This… this is impossible,” Carmen whispered, her manicured fingers trembling as she clutched the lapels of her designer coat. “You’re bluffing. You’re just an old retired soldier trying to scare us.”
Alexander straightened up, pulling his phone from his pocket and tapping the screen twice. He set it face up on the table, hitting speaker.
A sharp, crisp voice echoed instantly through the cavernous warehouse:
“This is Assistant U.S. Attorney Vance speaking. We have received the preliminary forensic audit report regarding the Robles family trust and associated offshore accounts. We are currently preparing federal seizure warrants for all domestic commercial real estate holdings, including the Oak Lawn development project and the primary residence on Maple Avenue.”
Carmen staggered backward, catching herself against the shoulder of her son. “No… no, please… Marcus, listen to me, we’ve known each other for years—!”
The voice on the phone cut her off coldly: “Mrs. Robles, any further communication must be directed through your federal public defender. The warrants will be executed within the hour.”
The line went dead.
The warehouse fell into an absolute, suffocating silence. The two cousins who had accompanied Carmen stood paralyzed near the entrance, realizing with sudden, horrifying clarity that their association with Carmen’s financial crimes had just implicated them as co-conspirators.
Javier turned a pale, sickly shade of green, grabbing his mother’s arm. “Mom… Mom, what did you do? What did you get us into?”
“Shut up, you idiot!” Carmen shrieked, finally losing all semblance of composure, her face twisting into an ugly mask of rage. She pointed a shaking finger directly at Alexander’s chest. “You think you’ve won? You think you can destroy everything we’ve built over thirty years just because your brat of a daughter wouldn't sign a piece of paper?”
“We didn't destroy your empire, Carmen,” a cool, calm voice echoed from the shadows near the back of the warehouse.
Everyone turned.
From behind a stack of wooden shipping pallets, Clara stepped out into the shafts of sunlight. She was wearing a tailored black trench coat, her dark hair pulled back into a sleek ponytail, carrying a leather folio under her arm.
“You destroyed yourselves the moment you thought greed was stronger than family,” Clara said, walking slowly toward the group until she stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Alexander.
Carmen glared at Clara with pure venom. “You! This is all your fault! You raised a cold, ungrateful little bitch who wouldn't even share her wealth with her new family!”
Clara didn't blink. She didn't raise her voice. She simply opened her leather folio and pulled out a single, neatly folded document, holding it up for everyone to see.
“Do you know what this is, Carmen?” Clara asked softly.
Carmen didn't answer.
“This is an annulment petition,” Clara said, her voice ringing clear across the concrete floor. “Filed this morning under emergency provisions for fraud, physical assault, and criminal conspiracy on a wedding night. It voids the marriage certificate before it was even officially recorded with the county clerk.”

Javier let out a strangled gasp. “An annulment? You can’t do that! We had a church wedding! We had three hundred guests!”
“You had a crime scene,” Clara corrected coldly. “And by sunset today, the entire city of Dallas will know that Javier Robles is not a grieving husband, but a coward who stood outside a hotel room door while his mother and her thugs beat his bride.”
