Chapter 4 - THE PRICE OF AN ERROR

Noah slowly set his glass down on the side table. He didn't stand up. He didn't raise his voice. He simply leaned back, resting his hands on his lap, looking at Grant as if he were a cockroach that had just crawled across a clean floor.
"Sterling," Noah said softly.
Grant looked between me lying in the hospital bed and Noah sitting in the corner, his mind frantically trying to assemble the pieces of a nightmare he couldn't comprehend.
"I... I don't understand," Grant stammered, taking a step toward the bed, then quickly glancing back at Noah. "Mr. Whitaker, what are you doing in my wife's room? Do you... do you two know each other?"
"Your wife was dying on the pavement outside your building while you were worrying about your Maserati's leather," Noah said, his tone entirely void of emotion. "I brought her here. I authorized her emergency surgery. I saved your daughter's life while you were getting on a private jet with your mistress."
Grant winced as if he had been struck. He shot a frantic, angry look at me. "Emma! What did you tell him?! I was going to Vancouver for us! For our family's future! Mr. Whitaker, please, you have to understand—Vanessa arranged an emergency pitch meeting with your Canadian directors—"
"There was no meeting in Vancouver," Noah interrupted smoothly.
Grant froze. "What?"
"My Canadian directors do not hold meetings at midnight on Christmas Eve Eve," Noah said, a cruel, faint smile curling his lips. "Vanessa Cole reached out to a junior assistant in my firm, lied about having a preliminary agreement, and booked a suite at the Fairmont. She played you, Sterling. She wanted a free trip to Canada on your company card, and you were stupid enough to abandon your laboring wife for it."
Grant’s face turned from pale to a deep, sickly red. "No... no, that's impossible. Vanessa said—"
"Vanessa Cole’s security clearance was revoked an hour ago," Noah stated coldly. "And as for your firm, Sterling Global..."
Noah reached into his inner jacket pocket, pulled out a gold fountain pen, and signed a small document resting on his knee.
"Ten minutes ago, Whitaker Enterprises acquired seventy percent of your firm's outstanding debt from your primary lender, First National," Noah said, looking up. "I am now your primary creditor. And I am calling the entire thirty-five-million-dollar balance due immediately."
Grant stopped breathing. He actually swayed on his feet, reaching out to grab the footboard of my hospital bed to keep from collapsing.
"T-thirty-five million?" Grant gasped, his voice cracking. "Mr. Whitaker, please! That's... that's liquidation! That will bankrupt me! It will destroy my entire life's work!"
"You made your choice outside your apartment, Sterling," Noah replied softly, using the exact words he had spoken to me at the elevator doors. "You decided that your car seats and your mistress were worth more than your wife and child. Actions have consequences."
"Emma!" Grant screamed, turning to me with absolute desperation in his eyes. He threw himself onto his knees beside my bed, grabbing the edge of my blanket. "Emma, please! Talk to him! Tell him to stop! He's going to ruin us! We'll lose the house! We'll lose everything! Think about our baby!"
I looked down at the man I had loved for six years.
I didn't see the handsome, successful executive I had married. I saw a coward. A selfish, pathetic parasite who had left me to bleed in the rain, and who was now using our child as a human shield to save his bank account.
I pulled the blanket slowly out of his grasp.
"There is no 'us', Grant," I said, my voice cold, sharp, and steady. "You left me in the rain."
"Emma, I made a mistake! I panicked!" Grant begged, tears finally streaming down his cheeks. "I'll fire Vanessa! I'll sell the Maserati tomorrow! Just tell Mr. Whitaker to give me a chance!"
"Security," Noah called out quietly.
The two large men who had been standing outside the door immediately stepped into the room.
"Get him out of my sight," Noah ordered without looking up.
"Emma! Emma, don't do this!" Grant shrieked as the two massive guards grabbed him by his arms, dragging him backward out of the recovery suite. "You're my wife! You can't let him do this to me! EMMA!"
The heavy door shut, muffling his pathetic screams as he was hauled down the corridor.
Silence returned to the room.
I lay back against the pillows, feeling an overwhelming wave of exhaustion wash over me. The pain of the surgery was starting to throb beneath the pain medication, but inside my chest, a dark, heavy weight had been lifted.
Noah stood up, picking up his dark overcoat from the chair.
"You should rest," he said, stepping toward the door. "The NICU nurses will bring your daughter to you in the morning when you are stronger."
"Noah," I called out softly.
He stopped, turning his head to look at me.
"Why are you doing all of this?" I asked, looking into his cold gray eyes. "Destroying his company... paying for my surgery... staying here all night. What do you want from me?"
Noah looked at me for a long moment. For the first time, the icy mask slipped just a fraction, revealing something fierce, dark, and possessive underneath.

"I don't want anything from you, Emma," Noah said softly. "I am simply taking what he was too stupid to keep."
He turned and walked out of the room, closing the door behind him.
