Chapter 8 - The Price of Treason

Marcus was breathing heavily, his custom suit disheveled, his eyes wide and wild with a desperate, cornered madness.

“How?” Marcus shrieked, his arm trembling violently as he pressed the barrel of the gun harder against Claire’s head. “How are you moving?! You should be dead! I’ve been giving you enough poison to kill a horse for three years!”

I lay on the floor ten feet away, propped up on my left elbow, my dark eyes locked onto Marcus’s face with a lethal intensity that made the room freeze.

“You dragged it out too long, Marcus,” I rasped, my voice sounding like a demon speaking from the depths of hell. “You wanted to watch me suffer. You wanted to feel superior while you stole my life.”

Claire was sobbing hysterically, looking down at my broken body on the floor, her heart breaking into a thousand pieces. “Adrian... oh God, Adrian, your legs... your face...”

“I’m here, Claire,” I said softly, my eyes shifting to her for a fraction of a second to offer her peace. “I came for you.”

Marcus let out a crazed, hysterical laugh, his grip tightening on his revolver. “It doesn't matter! You’re a pathetic, broken cripple dragging yourself across the floor! Look at you, Moretti! The great crime boss laying at my feet like a dog!”

“You killed my Sophie,” I said, every word dripping with an absolute, terrifying weight. “You blew up my car. You locked my wife in a boathouse. And you tried to take my family.”

“I took everything!” Marcus screamed, his face contorting in rage. “I built your empire! I did the dirty work while you played happy family with her! I deserved the throne! I deserved it all!”

“You deserve nothing,” I whispered.

Before Marcus could pull the trigger on Claire, I flicked my right wrist.

The suppressed SIG Sauer pistol, which I had kept hidden beneath my sweater while dragging myself up the stairs, slid into my hand.

Pfft-pfft!

Two high-velocity rounds tore through Marcus’s right shoulder and wrist.

The silver revolver flew from his shattered hand, bouncing across the floorboards. Marcus shrieked in agony, clutching his blood-soaked arm, stumbling backward against the wall.

I didn't stop.

I dragged my upper body forward across the floor, moving like a relentless predator, reaching Marcus in two seconds flat.

I grabbed him by his silk tie, pulling his face down to my level with a force that cracked his jaw against my knee.

Marcus gasped for breath, staring into my eyes—staring into the dark, bottomless abyss of a father’s vengeance.

“Adrian... please...” Marcus whimpered, his terrifying arrogance vanishing into pure, pathetic cowardice. “We’re brothers... please...”

“I had a brother once,” I whispered into his ear. “I buried him three years ago.”

I took the tactical combat knife from my belt, unsheathed the eight-inch steel blade, and drove it deep through the top of his polished leather shoe, pinning his foot directly to the wooden floorboards.

Marcus let out a blood-curdling scream of agony.

I released his tie, letting him slump against the wall, trapped and bleeding out.

I turned around, crawling over to Claire’s chair.

I drew my knife, slicing through the heavy ropes binding her wrists and ankles with two swift strokes.

The moment she was free, Claire collapsed onto the floor beside me, throwing her arms around my neck, pulling my scarred face into her chest, weeping with a violence that shook her entire body.

“Adrian! Oh God, Adrian! I’m sorry! I’m so sorry!” she sobbed, kissing my face, my eyes, my scars. “I thought you were dead! He told me he would kill our baby if I tried to leave!”

I held her tight, burying my face in her neck, smelling her scent—a scent I had survived three years of hell just to breathe in again.

“I know, my love,” I whispered, holding her with all the strength left in my arms. “I know. The nightmare is over.”

A tiny voice echoed from the top of the stairs.

“Mommy?”

Claire froze. She pulled back from my chest, looking toward the open doorway.

Lily was standing at the top of the stairs, clutching her bear picture book, her small red muddy boots standing on the top step, looking into the room with wide, curious eyes.

“Lily!” Claire shrieked, scrambling across the floor to scoop her little girl into her arms, hugging her so tight the toddler let out a soft giggle.

Lily looked over Claire’s shoulder, smiling brightly at me as I lay on the floor.

“See, Mommy?” Lily said happily, pointing a sticky finger at me. “I told you the mister in the chair was going to help us.”

Claire looked at me, her eyes widening with profound, beautiful realization as she saw the love burning in my face for the little girl.

“She knows, Adrian,” Claire wept softly, smiling through her tears. “She knows who you are.”

Heavy footsteps thundered up the wooden stairs outside, and Uncle Dominic stepped into the room, holding a heavy shotgun, flanked by four armed old-guard Moretti soldiers.

Dominic took one look at Marcus pinned to the floor, then looked at me lying beside my wife and daughter.

Dominic lowered his weapon, bowing his head with deep, absolute reverence.

“The estate is secure, boss,” Dominic declared, his rough voice thick with pride and emotion. “Vale’s guards have surrendered or fled. The Moretti family is yours again.”

I looked at my uncle, then up at my wife and my daughter.

“Take us home, Dominic,” I commanded softly. “Take us home.”
