Chapter 6 - THE AFTERMATH

Harlon did not leave Port Alder that night. He could not.
He checked into a small, damp motel three miles down the coast road, away from the grand hotel he couldn't afford. He sat on the edge of the saggy mattress, drinking cheap whiskey straight from the bottle, staring at the peeling wallpaper while the ocean wind howled outside.
Every time he closed his eyes, he saw those two silver-gray pairs of eyes staring up at him.
Jonas and Leo.
They carried his blood. They carried the distinct, ancient features of the Vale family. And yet, when they looked at him, there was no recognition. No love. No warmth.
They had called another man Dad.
By midnight, his desperation drove him to call his mother, Evelyn Vale, who was living in a tiny rented apartment near the ruins of Larkspur House.
"Harlon?" his mother answered, her voice sharp and bitter. "Where are you? Did you secure the art investment deal?"
"I saw her, Mom," Harlon choked out, his voice slurry with alcohol and weeping. "I saw Corin."
A heavy silence fell over the line. "Corin? What does that arrogant girl have to do with anything? Did she finally agree to release the rest of the Swallow sketches?"
"She has twins, Mom," Harlon sobbed, clutching his stomach as if in physical agony. "Two boys. Five years old. She was pregnant when she left. She carried my sons away, and I didn't even know."
Evelyn gasped loudly over the phone. "What?! Pregnant?! Two boys?! Harlon... my God, Vale heirs! We have to call our lawyers! We can sue for custody! We can demand visitation rights! We can use this to force her to settle the family estate!"
Harlon let out a horrific, hollow laugh.
"Lawyers?" Harlon spat, tears running down his face into his whiskey glass. "Mom... another man legally adopted them years ago. His name is Julian Vance. He’s a respected historian, wealthy, powerful... and he loves her. Corin built a wall around them so thick that our name doesn't even exist to those boys."
"That’s illegal!" Evelyn screamed. "She hid your heirs!"
"She didn't hide them!" Harlon roared into the phone, his voice echoing off the motel walls. "We drove her away! We kissed in her conservatory! We wore her mother's locket! We tried to steal her work while she was pregnant with my children! We destroyed ourselves, Mom!"
He slammed the phone down, throwing the receiver against the wall until plastic shattered across the floor.
The next morning, Harlon stood outside the coastal preschool across from the harbor square, hidden behind a thick pine tree.
At eight-thirty, a silver station wagon pulled up to the curb.
Julian Vance stepped out first, opening the rear door. He lifted five-year-old Leo out, setting him on his feet, before helping Jonas climb out holding his small green backpack.
Corin stepped out from the passenger side. She leaned down, adjusting Jonas’s collar and kissing Leo’s forehead. Both boys gave her big, messy hugs before taking Julian’s hands, skipping happily toward the wooden doors of the schoolhouse.
Corin stood by the car, watching them go with a look of pure, unadulterated peace.
Harlon watched from behind the pine tree, his hands clenched into tight fists in his coat pockets. He wanted to run out. He wanted to scream their names. He wanted to force the world to acknowledge that those were his sons.
But as he watched Julian kneel down to tie Leo’s bootlace, and saw Leo laughingly pat the top of Julian’s head, Harlon knew the absolute, crushing truth.

If he stepped out now, he wouldn't be a father coming home.
He would just be a monster ruining a beautiful morning.
