Chapter 6 - The Poisoned Offer

At 4:00 PM that afternoon, while I was resting in Adrian’s study, his executive assistant notified us that Richard Vance—my parents' defense lawyer—was requesting an urgent private meeting in the building's conference room.
Adrian and I walked into the glass-walled room together.
Richard Vance sat at the long mahogany table, a thick leather briefcase open beside him. He looked visibly stressed, his tie slightly crooked.
"Evelyn. Mr. Vale," Vance said, standing up and offering a brief nod. "Thank you for seeing me."
"You have five minutes, Vance," Adrian said coldly, sitting down beside me without offering a handshake. "Make it quick."
Vance cleared his throat, pulling a stack of legal documents out of his briefcase. "My clients, Eleanor and Harold Mercer, recognize that the current situation is... extraordinarily delicate. Harold is facing significant prison time, and the family name is being dragged through the press."
"He struck his daughter with a hammer," Adrian pointed out, his voice razor-sharp. "He belongs in prison."
"Be that as it may," Vance continued, turning his attention to me. "Mrs. Mercer is prepared to offer a settlement, Evelyn. A complete, total family resolution."
He pushed a paper across the table toward me.
"What is this?" I asked, looking down at the document.
"It is a voluntary waiver and liability release," Vance explained smoothly. "If you agree to drop all personal injury claims, request that the prosecutor reduce Harold’s charges to a misdemeanor with probation, and agree to sign over forty percent of your grandmother's trust shares to Chloe... Eleanor will agree to officially bless your marriage on Saturday."
I stared at the lawyer in absolute disbelief. Then I let out a soft, bitter laugh.
"She will agree to 'bless' my marriage?" I repeated. "She thinks her blessing is worth forty percent of my inheritance and my father's freedom?"
"Evelyn, be reasonable," Vance urged, leaning forward. "If your father goes to prison, Mercer Logistics will go bankrupt within six months. The stock is already plummeting. Your family will be ruined. Do you really want to walk down the aisle knowing you destroyed your own parents?"
Before I could speak, Adrian slammed his hand down onto the mahogany table.
The loud BOOM echoed off the glass walls, making the lawyer jump in his seat.
"Listen to me very carefully, Vance," Adrian said, leaning across the table until he was inches from the attorney's face. "Your clients didn't just attack my fiancé. They attempted to execute a fraudulent corporate theft and a violent assault. If you bring another insulting 'offer' like this to my wife, I will personally fund a civil lawsuit that will freeze every bank account your firm operates."
"Mr. Vale, this is a private family negotiation—"
"There is no family anymore," I cut in, my voice dead calm as I picked up the settlement document, tore it down the middle, and tossed the pieces onto the table. "Tell my mother that she can keep her blessing. On Saturday, I am marrying Adrian. And on Monday, my legal team will be filing for the complete liquidation of Mercer Logistics to recover stolen trust assets."
Vance’s face went pale. He slowly packed his papers back into his briefcase, realizing that his intimidation tactics had failed completely.

"You're making a terrible mistake, Evelyn," Vance muttered as he stood up.
"No," I replied, holding my head high. "My father made the mistake three days ago. I am just making sure he pays for it."
