Chapter 7 - Into the Deep

The rain had turned into a thick, alpine mist by the time our three reinforced SUVs pulled off the main highway onto the secluded access road leading to the St. Jude Medical Research Annex.

The facility looked like a ultra-modern private hospital—a sleek structure of dark glass and brushed aluminum nestled against the steep granite cliffs of the valley. But beneath the surface lighting lay a fortress. High-resolution infrared cameras swept the perimeter, and two heavily armored guard huts blocked the primary gate.

"Prescott, status on their internal communications?" I asked from the rear seat of the lead SUV, where Viktor sat bound and silent beside me.

"Jammer is online," Prescott replied from the front passenger seat. "We've jammed their long-range satellite links and local cellular towers. They can't call out to Frankfurt or Zurich, but their internal hardwired alarm system is still active. Once we cross the threshold, we'll have less than fifteen minutes before their automated lockdown doors seal the sub-levels."

"Fifteen minutes is all we need," I said, checking my rifle optics one last time. "Remember: our priority is sub-level three. Cryogenic Storage Unit 4. Retrieve the neutralizer vial and the 1998 research ledger. Anything else in that vault can be burned."

We drove straight up to the security gate.

The head guard stepped out of the hut, holding a submachine gun across his chest. He gestured for the driver to lower the window.

Prescott lowered the window, holding out Viktor Vance’s official executive clearance pass while I pressed Viktor’s face close to the window’s biometric scanner mounted on the gate post.

A laser line swept across Viktor’s iris. The terminal chimed with a crisp, green confirmation: EXECUTIVE CLEARANCE ACCEPTED - WELCOME BARON VANCE.

The steel gate arms swung open.

"Drive," I ordered.

The SUVs parked directly in the underground loading bay beneath the main facility. We moved fast. Prescott and our four tactical operatives deployed in a tight perimeter, cutting the bay's main power lines with specialized EMP charges. The subterranean garage plunged into darkness, illuminated only by the red glow of emergency exit signs.

We dragged Viktor Vance out of the vehicle and pushed him toward the heavy steel freight elevator that served as the primary access to the subterranean bunker.

"Keycard," I commanded.

Viktor hesitated, but Prescott pulled a combat knife and pressed the cold edge against his earlobe. Viktor flinched, nodding toward his inner vest pocket. Prescott retrieved a sleek, black encrypted smart-card and swiped it through the elevator panel.

The heavy steel doors slid open. Inside, the elevator was entirely lined with reinforced steel plates and high-definition security cameras.

"Sub-level three," I said, shoving Viktor inside. Elena, Prescott, and two operatives stepped in behind us, while the remaining two men stayed behind to secure our exit route in the garage.

The elevator descended rapidly. The numbers on the digital display ticked down: G... B1... B2... B3.

With a deep, pneumatic hiss, the doors opened into a broad, white corridor lined with reinforced glass laboratories. The air was ice-cold, smelling strongly of liquid nitrogen and industrial sterilizers.

Red emergency lights were flashing rhythmically along the ceiling. A synthesized automated voice echoed through the hallway speakers in French and English:

"WARNING. TIER-1 SECURITY ANOMALY DETECTED ON LEVEL THREE. ALL PERSONNEL EVACUATE TO PRIMARY REFUGE AREA. VAULT LOCKDOWN IN TEN MINUTES."

"They know we're here," Elena whispered, her hand tightening around her handgun.

"Then we run," I said.

We sprinted down the long, white corridor, dragging Viktor between us. Through the glass walls of the surrounding labs, I could see abandoned research stations, complex bio-reactors, and rows of glowing blue incubation chambers—the stomach-churning proof of the monstrous genetic experiments taking place beneath the Swiss soil.

At the end of the hall stood the entrance to the main vault—a massive, circular blast door made of solid tungsten-steel, looking more like the entrance to a bank vault than a medical lab.

Mounting the wall beside the vault was a complex security interface: a retina scanner, a palm-print reader, and a digital keypad requiring a twelve-digit rolling access code.

"Open it, Viktor," I snarled, shoving him against the interface.

Viktor looked at the digital countdown timer mounted above the vault door: 08:42... 08:41... 08:40.

"If I open this door manually during an active emergency protocol," Viktor said, his voice cracking with sudden panic, "the internal Halon fire-suppression system will trigger automatically! We will have less than sixty seconds to find your compound before the room is completely depleted of oxygen!"

"Then you better hope my sister-in-law left clear instructions," I said, stepping up beside him, pressing his face into the retina scanner while forcing his hand onto the palm reader.

The interface beeped rapidly. Red lights turned to yellow, then to a bright, solid green.

BIOMETRIC AUTHENTICATION VERIFIED. ENTER EXECUTIVE ACCESS CODE.

"Code!" I demanded, tightening my hand on his shoulder.

Viktor spat on the floor. "I'll never give it to you. Aetherius will tear your life apart—"

Elena stepped forward, grabbed his hand, and placed his index finger on the keypad. She didn't ask him. She looked at a small, folded piece of paper she pulled from her pocket—the reverse side of the Swiss medical report Genevieve had given her two years ago.

Written in fine cursive beneath Genevieve’s signature was a twelve-digit number sequence.

Elena manually forced Viktor’s finger onto the keys, typing the numbers one by one: 4 - 8 - 1 - 5 - 1 - 6 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 2 - 0 - 9.

The heavy tungsten vault door clunked loudly as four massive steel locking pins retracted into the frame. With a deep, grinding roar of heavy gears, the vault door slowly swung open, releasing a cloud of freezing, white nitrogen fog into the corridor.

At that exact moment, a deafening siren screamed through the ceiling speakers.

"HALON GAS DEPLOYMENT INITIATED. OXYGEN DEPLETION IMMINENT. EVACUATE IMMEDIATELY."
