Chapter 9 - The Price of Redemption

An hour later, the private medical suite at St. Thomas' Hospital was surrounded by armed London police officers and federal agents.
Inside the private room, Luca sat on the edge of the examination bed. A doctor had just finished bandaging the gunshot graze on his shoulder and the deep lacerations along his ribs.
On the couch across the room, Leo lay fast asleep, wrapped in a warm blanket, exhausted from the day's ordeal. Julian stood near the door, his firearm holstered, watching Luca with a grim, solemn expression.
Giana stood by the window, looking out at the River Thames and the Big Ben clock tower in the distance.
The door opened softly, and a senior agent from the United States Department of Justice walked in, holding a leather folder.
"Mr. Bellini," the agent said. "The raid on Vanessa Bellini's private residence in Kensington was successful. She and her brothers have been taken into custody under international warrants for corporate fraud, blackmail, and attempted murder."
Luca didn't look up. "And the plea agreement?"
"By signing these documents," the agent explained, laying the papers on the table, "you are surrendering one hundred percent of the Bellini enterprise's illegal holdings to the federal government. You are also providing state's evidence against forty senior figures in the syndicate. In exchange, your personal immunity is granted, and the Bellini name will be legally dissolved."
"Give me the pen," Luca said without hesitation.
The agent handed him a silver pen. Luca signed his name rapidly across every signature line, liquidating a century-old empire worth billions without a single second of hesitation.
"It's done," the agent said, taking the papers. "You're a free man, Mr. Bellini. But you're also broke."
"I was broke five years ago," Luca murmured softly, his eyes flicking over to Giana. "I just didn't know it yet."
The agent and Julian quietly stepped out of the room, closing the door behind them to give them privacy.
The room fell completely silent, save for the soft, rhythmic breathing of little Leo sleeping on the couch.
Giana walked slowly over to the bed, looking down at her former husband. He looked exhausted, stripped of his wealth, his power, his title, and his bloodline's legacy. He had willingly destroyed everything he had spent his life building—just to save them.
"Why did you do it, Luca?" Giana asked softly, her voice devoid of its former ice, replaced by a quiet, deep sadness. "You could have kept the empire. You could have fought Vanessa in court."
Luca looked up at her, his eyes filled with a raw, absolute clarity.
"Because the empire was a cage, Giana," he whispered, reaching out with a trembling hand, stopping just short of touching her fingers. "I spent five years living in a mansion full of ghosts, realizing that every dollar I owned was worthless because I didn't have you. I didn't have my son."
He looked over at Leo, a tear rolling down his bruised cheek.
"I know I can never undo that night," Luca said, his voice breaking. "I know I don't deserve your forgiveness. I don't ask you to come back to me. I don't ask you to love me again. But please... let me be a father to him. Let me spend the rest of my life earning the right to see him smile."
Giana looked at the man before her. The ruthless mob boss of Chicago was gone. Standing in his place was just a man—broken, bleeding, but finally redeemed by the truth.
She slowly reached out, her fingers wrapping around his cold, trembling hand, squeezing it gently.

"He needs a father, Luca," Giana whispered softly, a small, sad smile touching her lips. "And... he needs to know that his father finally made the right choice."
Luca closed his eyes, leaning his forehead against her hand, letting out a deep, shuddering sob of relief that seemed to wash away five years of dark, agonizing winter.
