Chapter 3 - The Myth of the Warehouse

By Thursday evening, Gwendolyn Vance was floating on a cloud of triumph.
She had spent six thousand dollars of Samuel’s credit card limit on white laminate furniture, neon wall signs reading CHLOE’S REALM, and plush shag carpeting to cover the high-end oak flooring that had been scratched during the closet demolition.
The master bedroom was completely transformed. The subtle, elegant cherry-and-cream palette that Eleanor Vance had carefully chosen had been entirely eradicated, replaced by a glaring, hyper-bright social media set.
"It looks amazing, Mom!" Chloe gushed, sitting on her new velvet sofa while adjusting her ring light. "I’m going to do a full 'Room Tour' live-stream tomorrow at nine AM. I’ve already got two thousand people waiting in the chat room!"
Downstairs in the kitchen, Gwendolyn was pouring a glass of boxed Pinot Grigio when the doorbell rang.
She frowned. "Sam! Get the door!"
Samuel was sitting in the recliner in the dark living room, staring blankly at the television. He didn't move.
Gwendolyn clicked her tongue in annoyance, set her wine glass down, and walked to the front door. "If that’s the delivery driver with Chloe’s mirror, tell him to carry it—"
She pulled the door open.
Standing on the front porch was not a delivery driver.
It was a courier wearing a crisp gray uniform, holding a thick, legal-sized manila envelope stamped with red ink: URGENT LEGAL SERVICE - PERSONAL DELIVERY ONLY.
"Gwendolyn Vance?" the courier asked.
"Yes?" Gwendolyn said, crossing her arms defensively. "What is this?"
"You've been served," the courier said flatly, handing her the envelope. He didn't wait for a tip or a signature; he turned around, walked down the stone path, and climbed into his unmarked sedan.
Gwendolyn stood on the porch, holding the heavy envelope. Her name was printed on the front label, but underneath it, in larger bold font, was her husband's name: SAMUEL VANCE.
"Sam!" Gwendolyn yelled, her voice sharp with sudden irritation. "Some process server just dropped off some stupid court papers! Did you forget to pay the truck insurance again?!"
Samuel walked out of the living room, his face pale in the entryway light. He took the envelope from her hands.
He tore open the top seal.
Inside was a thirty-page legal binder bound in black linen.
The cover page bore the formal letterhead of Sterling, Miller & Vance LLP.
Samuel’s hand began to shake before he even read the first sentence.
"What is it?" Gwendolyn demanded, reaching for the paper. "Read it out loud! Is it some tax nonsense?"
Samuel didn't read it out loud. His eyes skimmed the bold, capitalized headings across the first three pages:
NOTICE OF IRREVOCABLE TERMINATION OF LIFE ESTATE DEMAND FOR IMMEDIATE VACATION OF PREMISES WITHIN 24 HOURS APPLICATION FOR EMERGENCY WRIT OF POSSESSION
"Sam!" Gwendolyn snatched the top page out of his trembling hands. "What is this trash?! 'Termination of Life Estate'? What life estate?! This is your house!"
"No..." Samuel whispered. His voice was barely a croak. The blood had completely drained from his face, leaving his skin a sickly, gray color. "No... she didn't..."
"She who?!" Gwendolyn yelled. "What are you talking about?!"
Samuel collapsed onto the entryway bench, his hands covering his face.
"Eleanor," Samuel choked out. "The house... the house never belonged to me, Gwendolyn."
Gwendolyn froze. The manicured smile vanished from her face. "What do you mean it didn't belong to you? You’ve lived here for twenty years! We pay the property taxes!"
"Eleanor bought out my equity in 2011!" Samuel sobbed, his shoulders shaking. "She put the entire property into an irrevocable trust for Paige! I only had a conditional right to live here as long as Paige lived here in the master room!"
Gwendolyn stared at him, her brain frantically trying to process the words. "Conditional? What conditions?!"
"If I ever tried to kick Paige out..." Samuel looked up, his eyes wide with raw, unadulterated terror, "...my right to live here ends immediately. Title transfers to Paige. One hundred percent."
Gwendolyn’s breath hitched in her throat. The heavy paper in her hand felt suddenly like lead.
"That’s... that’s impossible!" Gwendolyn screamed, her voice reaching a high, frantic pitch. "You signed the deeds! You're the father! She’s twenty-five! A father can't be evicted by his own daughter!"
"Read page four, Gwendolyn!" Samuel yelled back, his voice cracking with utter ruin. "Read page four!"
Gwendolyn turned the page with shaking fingers.
Page four contained a bold, red-underlined itemization prepared by Marcus Sterling:
Item 1: Intentional Destruction of Trust Property (Demolition of hand-carved cherry millwork valued at $45,000). Item 2: Illegal Expulsion of Resident Co-Trustee (Paige Vance). Item 3: Unlawful Transfer of Master Suite to Unauthorized Third Party (Chloe).
Total Damages Assessed: $142,000. Status of Occupancy: REVOKED. Eviction Date: Friday, September 15, at 8:00 AM.
At that exact moment, Chloe came bouncing down the stairs, holding her phone on a selfie stick. "Hey Mom! Should I use the gold curtain rods or the silver ones for the live-stream setup tomorrow?"

Gwendolyn turned to look at her daughter.
For the first time in nine years, Gwendolyn Vance had no words at all.
