Chapter 10 - The Sovereign Sun

That evening, the sun set over Florence in a spectacular display of crimson, violet, and burning gold.
Enzo and Elena walked hand in hand through the private gardens of the villa, surrounded by blooming olive trees, cypress, and sweet-smelling jasmine bushes. The world around them was quiet, peaceful, and entirely theirs.
They stopped near an old stone fountain overlooking the river below.
Enzo turned to face her, taking both of her hands in his.
“Two years ago,” Enzo said softly, his voice carrying a deep, resonant emotion, “you walked into my office in Rome with a leather binder full of numbers and a look in your eyes that told me you weren't afraid of anything in my world.”
Elena smiled, her thumb gently tracing the back of his hand. “I was terrified, Enzo. You looked like a man made of iron.”
“I was made of iron,” he agreed quietly. “Because I thought that was the only way to survive. I thought love was a liability. I thought trust was a weakness that would eventually get a knife put in my back.”
He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small, velvet-lined box. He opened it, revealing a stunning, flawless emerald ring surrounded by microscopic diamonds, glowing brilliantly under the twilight sky.
Elena’s breath caught in her throat, her hazel eyes glistening with sudden, happy tears.
“Enzo...” she whispered.
“You proved me wrong, Elena,” Enzo said, dropping to one knee before her on the smooth stone path, looking up into her face with absolute, unreserved devotion. “You showed me that the only thing worth fighting for, the only thing worth building an empire for, is the person who makes you want to stay alive. I don't want a financial advisor. I don't want an employee. I want you as my wife, my partner, and my sovereign.”
He looked up at her, waiting for her answer as the Mediterranean stars began to twinkle in the darkening sky above them.
Elena knelt down beside him, throwing her arms around his neck and pressing her lips firmly against his.
“Yes,” she cried softly against his mouth, her tears spilling over her cheeks in pure joy. “Yes, Enzo. A thousand times yes.”
He slid the emerald ring onto her finger, sealing the promise with a long, deep kiss that bound their souls together forever.

Far behind them, standing near the archway of the terrace, Marco watched them quietly. He raised his glass of wine toward the sun set, a quiet, contented smile resting on his scarred face, before turning to leave them to their private paradise beneath the Italian sun.
The shadows of their past were gone. The empire was secure. And Enzo Moretti had finally found the one thing no gun, no money, and no power could ever buy: the heart of the woman he loved.
