Chapter 8 - The Confrontation

The grand parlor was the largest room on the second floor, dominated by high ceilings, crystal chandeliers, and a massive marble fireplace.

Julian Vale stood near the hearth, sipping a glass of Roman’s vintage scotch, his four armed lieutenants standing strategically near the exits.

"He actually agreed to see me?" Julian asked Evelyn, who stood nervously near the double doors. "The hermit finally decided to step out of his cave?"

"Mr. Vale will be down shortly," Evelyn said coldly.

Julian laughed, a slick, arrogant sound. "Don't call him Mr. Vale, Evelyn. He's a ghost. The family knows it. The commission knows it. By next week, I’ll be taking over the Chicago accounts officially."

"Is that so, brother?"

A voice echoed from the top of the grand staircase—a voice that made Julian’s glass freeze halfway to his lips.

Julian turned around slowly.

Walking down the marble stairs was Roman Vale. He wasn't wearing his dark robe or hiding his face in the shadows. He wore a dark, perfectly fitted suit, his posture straight as a blade, his storm-gray eyes burning with absolute, terrifying clarity.

Behind him walked Clara, her head held high, the snub-nosed revolver held steadily at her side.

And beside them bounded Bear, the massive black beast, his fangs bare, a guttural growl vibrating from his chest that rattled the crystal pendants on the chandelier.

Julian’s face drained of every drop of color. The glass slipped from his fingers, shattering against the hardwood floor.

"Clara..." Julian choked out, his eyes wide with horror as if he were seeing two ghosts walking down from the grave together. "How... how are you..."

"I walked out of your cage, Julian," Clara said, her voice carrying across the silent parlor like a whip. "And I came home to my husband."

Julian’s lieutenants reached for their sidearms instinctively, but Roman was faster.

Before the men could clear their holsters, Roman drew his pistol, firing three precise, thunderous shots. The lead lieutenants collapsed to the floor instantly. The remaining two men threw their hands into the air, dropping their weapons in sheer terror as Bear lunged forward, pinning one to the wall with his massive paws, his jaws hovering inches from the man's throat.

Julian backed away toward the fireplace, stumbling over his own feet, his arrogant composure entirely shattered.

"Roman! Wait! Listen to me!" Julian screamed, raising his hands. "I did it for the family! You were weak! You were obsessed with her!"

Roman walked down the final steps, his boots clicking smoothly against the marble floor. He didn't rush. He didn't shout. He moved with the terrifying, absolute grace of an apex predator.

"You took four years of my life, Julian," Roman said softly, stepping right into his brother's space, pressing the cold steel of his pistol directly against Julian's forehead. "You made her suffer in the dark. You made me believe I killed the only thing I ever loved."

"Please, Roman!" Julian wept, collapsing to his knees on the marble floor. "We're blood!"

"Blood didn't stop you from setting Blackwood on fire," Clara said from behind Roman, her gun trained steadily on Julian's chest.

Roman looked down at his brother with pure, unadulterated contempt. "Evelyn," Roman called out quietly without taking his eyes off Julian.

May you like

"Yes, Mr. Vale?" Evelyn answered, stepping into the parlor, her eyes wide with shock and fierce triumph.

"Call the police chief," Roman ordered. "Tell him we have the man responsible for the Blackwood arson, the Ontario kidnappings, and corporate fraud. Tell him if he isn't here in ten minutes, I'll deal with it myself."
