Chapter 6 - TANGLED THREADS

The winter months bled into early spring, bringing subtle, profound changes to the Russo household.

Under Nora’s constant care, Camila’s condition stabilized remarkably. The frequency of her terrors diminished, replaced by long stretches of lucidity. She began spending her afternoons in the estate’s glass conservatory, surrounded by blooming orchids, painting watercolors while Nora read aloud from nursing textbooks.

And Vincent found himself spending every spare moment he had in the east wing.

What had begun as quick, late-night checks had transformed into a daily routine. He found excuse after excuse to visit. He brought his paperwork to the small conservatory table, reviewing financial ledgers and shipping manifests while the soft sound of Nora’s voice filled the warm air.

A quiet, unspoken intimacy had grown between them—a delicate thread pulled taut across two vastly different worlds.

One rainy Friday afternoon, Vincent entered the conservatory carrying a large, heavy leather box.

Nora was sitting on a stone bench, wiping green paint from Camila’s fingers with a damp towel. Camila had fallen asleep in her chair, a soft smile resting on her lips.

“What’s that?” Nora asked, looking up as Vincent set the box on the glass table.

“A delivery,” Vincent said. He unlatched the brass buckles and opened the lid.

Inside lay a collection of vintage vinyl records—original pressings of jazz legends from the 1940s and 50s, meticulously restored and housed in protective sleeves.

Nora’s eyes widened as she stepped closer to examine them. “Where did you find these? Some of these are practically impossible to get.”

“I have contacts in Chicago,” Vincent said, a subtle smirk touching his lips. “They were happy to part with them.”

Nora looked up at him, her dark eyes sparkling with genuine delight. Without thinking, she reached out and caught his arm, her hand resting on his forearm.

“Vincent... this is amazing. Your mother is going to love these.”

Vincent looked down at her hand on his arm. The warmth of her touch seemed to seep through his wool suit jacket, igniting a slow fire beneath his skin.

Nora caught herself, realizing how close she was standing to him. Her cheeks flushed a deep, rosy red, and she quickly pulled her hand back, taking a step away.

“I... I mean, thank you,” she stammered, her usual composure slipping. “It’s very generous.”

Vincent took a step forward, closing the distance between them once again. He looked down at her, his eyes intense and dark with an emotion he could no longer suppress.

“Nora,” he said, his voice low and thick.

“Yes?” she whispered, her heart hammering against her ribs.

“You don't have to pull away from me,” Vincent said softly, raising his hand to touch her face. His long, calloused fingers gently brushed a strand of dark hair behind her ear, his thumb lingering against the soft curve of her cheekbone.

Nora leaned faintly into his touch, her eyes fluttering shut for a fraction of a second.

“Vincent,” she murmured, her voice trembling. “This is dangerous. You know who you are... and you know who I am. I’m just a girl working here. Your men... your world...”

“I don't care about my men,” Vincent said fiercely, stepping even closer until there was no space left between them. “I don't care about the family rules. For six months, you’ve been the only light in this godforsaken house. You’re the only thing that keeps me sane.”

Nora looked up into his eyes, seeing the raw, desperate honesty stripped bare.

“Vincent...” she whispered.

Before she could finish her sentence, the sudden, violent sound of glass shattering echoed from the main hallway outside the conservatory.

Vincent’s reaction was instantaneous.

In a split second, the tender lover vanished. Vincent grabbed Nora by the waist, shoving her forcefully behind his broad frame, his right hand whipping inside his jacket to draw a heavy black pistol from his shoulder holster.

“Stay behind me!” Vincent barked, angling his body to shield both Nora and his sleeping mother.

The conservatory doors burst open, and Paulie staggered into the room, his face covered in blood, holding a wound in his abdomen.

“Vincent!” Paulie gasped, collapsing against a stone pillar. “It’s Carmine... he didn't go to prison. His lawyer got him out on bail. They’re inside the estate!”
