Chapter 9 - The Standing Boss

Adeline stepped past the frozen group, unlocked the heavy mahogany double doors, and swung them wide open.
Standing in the doorway was a tall, silver-haired man flanked by six heavily armed federal agents and four senior syndicate captains—the old guard of the Alfieri family who had served Nico's father thirty years ago.
"Dominic Alfieri, Arthur Ashcroft, Camille Ashcroft," the silver-haired man announced, pulling a thick leather badge from his coat. "Special Agent Vance, Federal Bureau of Investigation. We hold arrest warrants for grand fraud, corporate embezzlement, illegal distribution of controlled substances, and conspiracy to commit murder."
"This is an outrage!" Arthur Ashcroft roared, his silver hair shaking with fury. "I am a senior partner at Ashcroft & Reed! You have no authority—"
"We have seven hundred hours of encrypted audio recordings," Agent Vance interrupted calmly. "Provided by Mr. Nico Alfieri, captured through the internal security network of the Alfieri estate."
Dominic looked at his brother, his eyes wild with panic. "Nico... Nico, you're confused! The medication—"
"The medication was replaced two weeks ago, Dominic," Adeline’s voice cut through the room like a cold blade. "Every tablet you thought you were feeding him was tested, logged, and handed directly to the federal prosecutor's office."
Camille gasped, backing away toward the wall, her hands clutching her lace gown. "You... you little bitch..."
"Marcus is already in custody," Agent Vance added, stepping into the room as two federal agents moved forward with handcuffs. "He gave up the offshore bank accounts twenty minutes ago in exchange for a plea agreement."
Dominic’s eyes darted around the room like a trapped rat. Seeing no escape, his face contorted into a mask of pure, desperate rage.
He reached into his jacket, pulling a compact black pistol from his shoulder holster, pointing it straight at Adeline’s chest.
"You ruined everything!" Dominic screamed, his hand shaking violently on the trigger. "You worthless servant!"
CLICK.
Before Dominic’s finger could pull the trigger, a shadow exploded across the room.
Nico didn't use the wheelchair.
He stood up.
Six-foot-two of pure, unadulterated muscle and rage moved across the seven feet of space between them in less than half a second.
Nico’s broad left hand clamped around Dominic’s wrist like a hydraulic vise, twisting the gun upward toward the ceiling.
BANG!
A single shot shattered the crystal chandelier above, sending glass raining down onto the carpet.
Nico didn't flinch. He drove his right fist straight into Dominic’s jaw with the force of a battering ram.
Dominic’s head snapped back, his teeth spraying across the mahogany table as his body went limp, slamming hard onto the floorboards—unconscious before he even hit the ground.
The room fell into an absolute, suffocating silence.
Arthur Ashcroft sank into a chair, his face grey, his hands shaking as the federal agents slapped heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists.
Camille stood frozen against the wall, her mouth wide open, her eyes wide with terror as she stared at the man standing tall, broad-shouldered, and completely erect in the center of the room.
Nico stood over his brother's unconscious body, his breathing heavy, his dark hair falling over his forehead.
He adjusted the cuffs of his dark blue tuxedo jacket, his posture completely rigid, completely unbroken.
He turned his eyes slowly toward Camille.
"You asked me three weeks ago what I was going to do if you didn't put your hand down," Nico said, his voice echoing off the high ceilings like a thunderclap.
Camille began to weep—silent, terrified tears running down her red-painted lips.
Nico looked at Agent Vance. "Take them out through the front entrance. Let every guest in the ballroom watch them leave."

The federal agents moved quickly, dragging Dominic, Arthur, and Camille out into the hallway.
The heavy double doors clicked shut behind them, leaving only Nico and Adeline in the quiet, glass-strewn room.
