Chapter 10 - The Sovereign Path

One year after the Meridian Heritage Gala.

The autumn air in Manhattan was crisp and clean, smelling of dry oak leaves and fresh coffee.

I walked through Central Park alone, wearing a long camel-wool coat, dark leather boots, and dark sunglasses, holding a warm paper cup of green tea in my hand.

My phone vibrated gently in my pocket.

I pulled it out, seeing an incoming encrypted video call from Zurich.

I tapped the screen and brought the phone to my ear.

“Good morning, Julian,” I said warmly.

“Good morning, Chairwoman,” Julian’s voice echoed clearly over the line. “The global quarterly reports have just closed. The Vane-Heritage Fund has reached a total valuation of eighteen billion dollars. Your presence is requested at the International Economic Summit in Geneva next month.”

“Book the private transport, Julian,” I said, watching a group of children flying kites across the open meadow in the park. “I’ll be there.”

“Understood, Madam. Oh... and one small matter of personal detail, if I may?”

“Go ahead.”

“Our legal team received a formal petition this morning from a legal aid attorney representing Mr. Weston Prescott,” Julian said cautiously. “He is requesting a small monthly allowance from the former trust reserves, citing hardship.”

I stopped near the edge of the lake, watching the golden autumn leaves drift slowly across the surface of the quiet water.

I remembered the cold marble floor. I remembered the broken crystal bowl. I remembered the man in the charcoal tuxedo who had looked at my bloody hand and worried only about his imported stone.

“Deny the petition, Julian,” I said, my voice steady, peaceful, and completely absolute.

“Consider it done, Chairwoman,” Julian replied without hesitation. “Have a pleasant walk.”

I lowered the phone and slid it back into my coat pocket.

I took a deep breath of the crisp autumn wind, feeling the cool air fill my lungs, feeling the unshakeable strength radiating from deep within my soul.

I turned and continued my walk down the golden path of the park, stepping forward into the vast, limitless horizon of my own sovereign life—unbroken, unbossed, and entirely my own.
