Chapter 4 - Airborne to Virginia

While Dominic was screaming at the doorman on East 72nd Street, I was lying comfortably on a plush, leather sleeper sofa inside the cabin of a sleek Gulfstream C-37A military executive jet, flying eight thousand feet above the Eastern Seaboard.

Leo was sound asleep in a state-of-the-art portable bassinet beside me, his tiny chest rising and falling in rhythmic peace.

A flight surgeon stationed on the aircraft had already replaced my surgical dressings with advanced waterproof medical bandages, administered an intravenous pain relief drip, and checked my vital signs. The burning agony across my abdomen had subsided into a dull, manageable ache.

Captain Sarah Vance sat across from me, a secure military laptop open on her lap.

“Your father is currently finishing a emergency briefing with the Secretary of Defense at the Pentagon, ma’am,” Sarah reported softly. “He will be landing at the private strip on the Virginia estate in thirty minutes to meet you.”

“Thank you, Sarah,” I whispered, staring out the oval window at the white clouds passing below. “How is the legal team progressing?”

Sarah pulled up a file on her screen. “Mr. Jonathan Vance has locked down all personal accounts associated with your name. The joint checking account you shared with Dominic had a balance of four hundred and twenty thousand dollars—all deposited from your private trust. It was emptied and transferred back to your Virginia trust account at 1:30 PM.”

I let out a soft breath. Dominic had been planning to use three hundred thousand dollars of that money on Monday to pay off pressing debts owed by Thorne Capital. Now, he wouldn't even have enough money to buy a cup of coffee on his credit card.

“And Thorne Capital’s corporate lease?” I asked.

“The office floor Thorne Capital occupies on Wall Street is owned by a subsidiary of Brooks Real Estate Holdings,” Sarah said with a faint, dangerous smile. “Your father’s asset team issued a formal default eviction notice thirty minutes ago due to unauthorized subleasing and lease covenant violations. Marshals will be locking the office doors tomorrow morning at 8:00 AM.”

I leaned my head back against the leather headrest, closing my eyes.

For three years, I had shrunk myself to fit into Dominic’s small, arrogant world. I had worn modest clothes, stayed quiet when his mother criticized my hair, my cooking, and my family, and pretended not to notice when he treated my soft-spoken father like an uneducated country bumpkin during holiday dinners.

Whenever my father visited us in New York, he always wore a faded denim jacket, drove his twenty-year-old Ford F-150 truck, and spoke softly about his garden in Virginia. Dominic had assumed Dad was a low-ranking government retiree who had spent forty years pushing paper in a dusty basement office. Dominic had never bothered to search my father’s name on the internet—because Dominic was far too obsessed with his own reflection to care about anyone else.

If he had ever bothered to search General Charles Brooks, he would have seen pictures of my father standing beside United States Presidents, leading multinational coalitions, and wearing four stars on his uniform shoulders.

My phone, now fitted with a new encrypted SIM card, buzzed on the armrest.

It was an email notification from my master trust portal.

Dominic had just attempted to swipe his Thorne Capital corporate black card at an ATM on 72nd Street.

TRANSACTION DECLINED: ACCOUNT FROZEN BY OWNER.

Two seconds later, another notification popped up.

Dominic had attempted to book a room at the St. Regis Hotel using his personal credit card.

TRANSACTION DECLINED: INSUFFICIENT FUNDS / CREDIT LINE REVOKED.

I closed the notification window, a feeling of absolute, unbreakable peace washing over me.

Dominic Thorne was about to learn that when you strip away the money, the cars, and the penthouse supplied by the woman you abused, you are left with absolutely nothing.

“Captain Vance,” I said softly.

“Yes, Mrs. Vance?”

“Please tell the legal team to prepare the divorce petition,” I said, looking down at my son. “Full legal and physical custody. Zero visitation until Dominic submits to psychological evaluations and supervised drug testing.”

“Right away, ma’am,” Sarah replied, her fingers flying across her keyboard.

The jet gently began its descent toward the rolling green hills of the private Brooks Estate in Northern Virginia.
