Chapter 10 - The Sovereign Woman

Six months later.
The summer sun shone brightly over the Chicago riverfront. The city was alive with green trees, outdoor cafes, and the warm, golden breeze blowing off the lake.
I stood inside the high-ceilinged courtroom of the Cook County Circuit Court, wearing a tailored cream-colored suit, my hair styled in an elegant, professional bob.
Beside me stood Darcy Vance.
Across the room, sitting at the defense table, was Julian.
He looked unrecognizable. The sleek, arrogant man who had dragged me across a rug by my cardigan six months ago was completely gone. He wore a drab, oversized gray prison jumpsuit. His hair was shaved short, his eyes were hollow and sunken, and his hands were cuffed at the wrists.
Sitting behind him in the gallery was Fiona. She wore a cheap, faded dress from a department store, her hair gray and unstyled, sitting alone on the wooden bench. She looked fifteen years older. Without my money to fund her spa days, hair stylists, and country club dues, she was simply an impoverished, bitter old woman living in a small studio apartment funded by state assistance.
The judge—a stern, sharp-eyed woman named Honorable Judge Evelyn Carter—rapped her wooden gavel against the block.
BANG.
“In the matter of Hale v. Cole,” Judge Carter announced into the quiet courtroom. “The court has reviewed the final financial accounting, the forensic hand-writing analysis regarding the forged loan affidavits, and the criminal guilty plea entered by the defendant, Julian Cole.”
Judge Carter adjusted her glasses, looking down at Julian with stern disapproval.
“Mr. Cole, your conduct throughout this marriage was not merely abusive; it was systematically fraudulent. You exploited your wife’s financial generosity, forged her signature to fund a lavish lifestyle, and committed acts of physical battery and unlawful imprisonment.”
Judge Carter picked up her golden pen and signed the final decree.
“The court hereby orders:
The marriage between Sloan Hale and Julian Cole is officially dissolved.
Sloan Hale is granted one hundred percent sole ownership of all real estate, bank accounts, and personal property held under Sloan Enterprise Holdings LLC.
Julian Cole is ordered to pay full restitution in the amount of $240,000 for the forged business loans.
A permanent, lifetime Order of Protection is issued against Julian Cole and Fiona Cole.”
Judge Carter rapped her gavel once more.
BANG.
“Court is adjourned.”
Julian collapsed back into his chair, burying his face in his cuffed hands as the bailiffs stepped forward to escort him back to the county holding facility where he would serve the remainder of his eighteen-month sentence for felony loan fraud.
Fiona reached out toward him as he was led away, weeping softly, but Julian didn't even turn his head to look at her. The parasite dynamic had finally eaten itself alive.
Darcy turned to me, a radiant, triumphant smile on her face. She held out her hand.
“Congratulations, Miss Hale,” Darcy said warmly. “You are officially, legally, and permanently free.”
I shook her hand, then pulled her into a warm, fierce hug. “Thank you, Darcy. For everything.”
We walked out of the courtroom together, stepping through the grand marble lobby and out onto the sun-drenched front steps of the courthouse.
The summer air was warm and sweet. People were walking by, laughing, drinking iced coffee, living their lives.
My phone buzzed in my purse. I pulled it out and looked at the screen.
It was a text message from Arthur, the doorman at my penthouse: 'Good afternoon, Miss Hale. Your new Italian leather dining set has been delivered and assembled. The view of the lake is beautiful today.'
May you like
I smiled, sliding my phone back into my pocket.
I walked down the granite steps into the warm sunshine, my heels clicking firmly against the pavement—a woman who had walked through the dark, icy kitchen of abuse and emerged on the other side sovereign, unstoppable, and entirely whole.
