Chapter 7 - The Downfall

The grand mixer dissolved into absolute chaos. Guests began whispering frantically behind their hands, and within twenty minutes, half of the wealthy attendees had made quiet, awkward excuses to leave the estate.

Richard Cole practically dragged Evan and Vanessa into his private, oak-paneled study on the ground floor. Madeline walked in behind them, accompanied by her senior legal counsel, Marcus Vance.

Richard slammed the door shut, his face contorted in anger. "Are you out of your mind?!" he roared at Evan. "You brought a personal crisis into my home and publicly insulted the chief equity owner of my entire corporate empire!"

"I... I didn't know!" Evan pleaded, throwing his hands up in panic. "Mr. Cole, I swear I had no idea Madeline was involved in Apex Holdings! She never told me!"

"Because it was none of your business until we were legally bound!" Madeline said sharply, speaking up from the leather armchair where she had sat down. "And frankly, Evan, your complete lack of due diligence speaks volumes about your capability as an executive."

Vanessa sat on the velvet sofa, trembling with rage and humiliation. She glared at Evan with pure venom. "You idiot! You told me you were an up-and-coming power player! You told me you were going to secure multi-million dollar deals!"

"I was!" Evan shouted back, his composure completely shattering. "I built my event company from scratch! Vanessa, you were the one who convinced me to leave Madeline! You told me she was holding me back!"

"Because you made yourself sound like a genius!" Vanessa yelled back. "You let me pay for things... wait, no, you used my credit card issues to act like a savior when you were broke!"

"Enough!" Richard Cole shouted, slamming his hand onto his heavy mahogany desk. He turned to Madeline, his hands visibly shaking. "Ms. Carter... please. Let us discuss this professionally. My daughter's ignorance and Mr. Hayes' foolishness should not jeopardize our existing corporate restructuring agreements."

Madeline looked at her attorney, Marcus Vance, who pulled a crisp white document from his leather briefcase and placed it on Richard’s desk.

"Mr. Cole," Marcus Vance stated in a cold, professional tone. "Under Section 8C of the Apex-Cole Equity Agreement, any conduct by senior officers or their immediate family that brings severe public reputational damage to the parent holding entity constitutes a material breach of governance."

Richard’s eyes widened in horror. "You're triggering the recall clause?"

"We are," Madeline said softly. "Apex Holdings is formally assuming direct operational control of Cole Global Development effective at nine o'clock tomorrow morning. You will remain on the board in an advisory capacity, Richard, but your voting rights are officially suspended pending a complete forensic accounting audit."

Richard sank back into his executive chair, looking suddenly ten years older. "And... and my family's monthly allowance structure?"

"Terminated," Madeline replied without hesitation. "Vanessa will need to seek independent employment or rely on her own personal income stream. Apex Holdings will no longer subsidize personal luxury lifestyles."

Vanessa let out a strangled gasp, burying her face in her hands.

Madeline then turned her attention to Evan, who was standing frozen against the bookshelf, looking completely broken.

"As for you, Evan," Madeline said, standing up and smoothing down her velvet dress. "My legal team has already contacted your corporate clients. When they learned that your firm was facing severe ethical liability, they exercised their right to cancel their contracts. Furthermore, Apex Holdings holds the primary lease on your downtown office space. Your rent is three months in arrears."

Evan’s jaw dropped. "Maddie, please... you can't kick my business out of the office! That's my entire livelihood! I spent six years building that company!"

"You spent six years using my emotional and financial support to build that company," Madeline corrected him, stepping right up to him. Her eyes were clear, fierce, and entirely devoid of love. "And then you threw me away on a text message from an airport terminal."

She leaned in slightly, her voice dropping to an icy whisper.

"I gave you six years of my life, Evan. You gave me twenty minutes of shame at an altar. Consider this contract settled."
