Chapter 3 - The Gift of Life

The operating room was a chaotic blur of stainless steel, harsh halogen lights, and the frantic shouting of medical staff.

“BP is dropping! 70 over 40!”

“Get two units of O-negative on the line!”

“Dr. Keller, the placenta has completely detached!”

Claire lay on the cold operating table, her body trembling uncontrollably under the blue surgical drapes. A clear plastic oxygen mask covered her face, fogging up with every shallow, terrified breath she took.

She couldn't feel her lower body through the spinal block, but she could feel the pressure, the cold air, and the terrifying realization that her world was ending.

“Where is he?” Claire wept into the mask, her tears running sideways into her hair. “Is Grant here...?”

Dr. Keller stood over her, her surgical mask stained with blood, her eyes filled with grim determination. “Focus on me, Claire! Keep your eyes on me! We have Baby A out—it’s a girl! She’s breathing, but she needs the NICU immediately!”

A faint, tiny cry—like the chirp of a wounded bird—echoed across the room.

“Baby A is stabilized!” a nurse called out. “What about Baby B?”

Dr. Keller’s face went pale. “Baby B’s cord is compressed. He’s not getting oxygen. We need the ECMO bypass machine now!”

The charge nurse rushed to the wall intercom. “NICU Main, this is OR 3! Send the portable ECMO unit down immediately!”

A static-filled voice squawked back through the speaker. “OR 3, we can’t release the ECMO unit! Patient coverage authorization was canceled twenty minutes ago by the primary insurance holder, Holloway Urban Systems! The machine is locked by administration!”

Dr. Keller cursed out loud, slamming her gloved hand against the tray. “Who locked it? That baby will die in four minutes without oxygen bypass!”

“I locked nothing.”

The heavy steel doors of the operating room swung open.

Victor Vance stepped into the sterile field. He had thrown a blue surgical gown over his suit, a mask fitted over his face, his silver eyes cutting through the harsh room like searchlights.

“Who are you?” Dr. Keller shouted, holding her bloodied instruments. “This is a sterile procedure room!”

Victor ignored her. He walked straight past the nurses, stepping directly to the head of the operating table where Claire lay fading from consciousness.

He reached down, taking Claire’s cold, trembling, blood-stained hand into his broad, warm palm.

Claire’s eyes fluttered open. Through the blur of her tears and the dimming lights, she saw the silhouette of a man she hadn't seen in six long years.

“...Victor?” she whimpered, her voice barely a breath.

“I’m here, Claire,” Victor said softly, his voice cutting through the panic of the room like a tether to reality. He squeezed her fingers, his grip firm, warm, and absolute. “You’re not alone.”

He turned his head toward the charge nurse at the intercom.

“Contact the Chief of Medicine immediately,” Victor commanded, his voice booming with the unquestioned authority of a man who owned half the healthcare networks in the Midwest. “Tell him Victor Vance has just purchased the entire St. Jude’s Medical Complex cash. Unlock every machine in this building, or I will fire the entire administrative board before the sun comes up.”

The nurse stared at him, her mouth agape under her mask, then scrambled for the phone.

Ten seconds later, the wall intercom chimed green.

“ECMO unit authorized. Override code 9-9-7-Vance.”

Two technicians rushed into the room pushing a tall, stainless-steel machine covered in clear plastic tubing and digital monitors.

Dr. Keller didn't waste a millisecond. She hooked the tiny tubes to the newborn infant boy who had just been lifted from Claire’s womb.

For two agonizing minutes, the room was dead silent save for the hum of the pumps.

Then, a sudden, loud, healthy cry echoed from the metal warming tray.

Waaaaah! Waaaaah!

“Heart rate is 140!” the nurse shouted, bursting into tears of relief. “Baby B is pinking up! We have a stable pulse!”

Claire let out a long, shuddering sob, her hand going limp in Victor’s grip.

“They’re alive...” she whispered, her eyes closing as the anesthesia and sheer physical exhaustion pulled her down into the dark. “My babies... are alive...”

May you like

Victor leaned down close to her ear, his lips almost touching her hair.

“They are safe, Claire,” Victor whispered, his voice dark, fierce, and making a promise that no force on earth could break. “And when you wake up... Grant Holloway will lose everything he ever built.”
