Chapter 9 - The Return to Aurora Field

On a warm Saturday in autumn, Nathan, Hazel, and Lily drove back to the small blue house in Aurora Field.

The house was no longer empty. Donna Hartley lived there permanently now, supported by a lifelong annuity Nathan had established for her, acting as the girls’ beloved 'honorary grandmother.'

The yard was ablaze with orange and red fallen leaves. Hazel and Lily immediately burst out of the car, running through the lawn, jumping into massive piles of leaves that Donna had raked earlier that morning.

Nathan walked up the porch steps, carrying a large basket of fresh pastries from a bakery in Raleigh.

“You’re late, Nathan,” Donna called out from her porch swing, holding a cup of tea.

“Traffic on I-40,” Nathan smiled, setting the basket on the small table beside her. “How are you feeling, Donna?”

“Better now that my quiet house is noisy again,” Donna chuckled, watching the twins throw leaves into the air with high-pitched squeals of delight.

Nathan sat on the top wooden step, resting his elbows on his knees, watching his daughters play.

The little blue house, once a scene of grief and loss, had become a monument of enduring love. The pink bicycles still leaned against the porch—now upgraded to slightly larger models—and the dent in the fender of Lily’s bike had been straightened by Nathan’s own hands in his garage.

Hazel came running up the steps, her hair full of dry pine needles, holding a small, smooth gray stone she had found in the garden.

“Daddy, look!” she shouted, holding it out proudly. “It’s shaped like a heart!”

Nathan took the stone, turning it over in his palm. It was remarkably symmetrical, worn smooth by years of rain and earth.

“It is a heart, Hazel,” Nathan said softly.

“Can we keep it on Mama’s picture frame?” Lily asked, running up behind her sister, breathless and rosy-cheeked.

“We certainly can,” Nathan said, pulling both girls into his lap, sitting together on the porch steps under the warm autumn sun.
