Chapter 6 - The Confession on the Terrace

By nine o'clock that evening, the victory over Cross Commercial Real Estate was absolute.

Richard Cross had signed the transfer papers for the River North commercial portfolio at four-thirty PM, terrified of the state revenue audit Elise’s documents had promised to unleash. The news of Julian Cross’s formal indictment was now trending nationwide, and the medical board had permanently revoked his surgical license.

In the quiet, evening air of the Astor Street mansion, Vincent and Elise stood on the wide stone terrace on the third floor, looking out over the flickering lights of the Chicago skyline and the dark, vast expanse of Lake Michigan.

The rain was completely gone, replaced by a cool spring breeze that carried the scent of wet stone and green oak leaves from the park below.

Elise stood near the stone balustrade, wearing a long ivory silk robe over her clothes, holding a warm mug of tea.

Vincent stood beside her, his arm resting casually along the stone wall behind her shoulders, his broad frame sheltering her from the wind.

"It feels strange," Elise said softly, her eyes watching the headlights of cars moving along Lake Shore Drive.

"What feels strange?" Vincent asked.

"For two years, I lived in constant fear of making a mistake," she said, turning her head to look at his sharp profile under the moonlight. "I thought if I missed a detail, if I didn't work hard enough, if I didn't protect my family, everything would fall apart. And for six months, I felt like I was drowning in a room full of water, trying to keep my head above the surface so Leo wouldn't see."

She looked down at her bare left hand, where the red mark from the diamond ring was already fading under her skin.

"And now... it's over," she whispered. "Julian is gone. Leo is safe. The lease files are closed."

Vincent turned his body toward her, leaning his back against the stone balustrade, his dark eyes locked onto her face.

"It isn't over, Elise," Vincent said quietly.

Elise looked up, a sudden, soft hesitation in her eyes. "What do you mean?"

"The fight with Julian is over," Vincent said, reaching out with his right hand to gently touch the dark waves of her hair where they rested against her shoulder. "But you and I are just beginning."

Elise’s breath caught in her throat.

"Vincent..."

"I have been in love with you for eighteen months, Elise," Vincent said, his deep voice carrying no hesitation, no uncertainty, and no corporate reservation whatsoever.

The silence on the terrace became total. The distant sound of city traffic seemed to fade into nothingness.

Elise stared at him, her lips parted, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs. "Eighteen... months?"

"Eighteen months," Vincent repeated softly, his thumb gently tracing the line of her cheekbone. "Since the night you stayed until two in the morning helping me rebuild the acquisition model for the logistics union deal. You were sitting at the small table in my office, your hair falling out of your clip, drinking terrible cold machine coffee, refusing to leave until every single dollar was accounted for."

He offered a small, tender smile that made her throat tighten with emotion.

"I sat at my desk, watching you work," Vincent murmured, "and I realized that I had spent forty years building an empire, but I had never seen anything as truly beautiful as your mind."

Elise felt tears hot and thick rising behind her eyes, but this time they were not born of fear or pain.

"Why didn't you say anything?" she whispered.

"Because you were my employee," Vincent said simply, his voice heavy with dark, absolute respect. "Because you were young, you had responsibilities, and I am a man with a name that carries heavy shadows in this city. I promised myself I would never use my position, my money, or my power to make you feel obligated to look at me."

He stepped closer, his broad chest inches from hers, his tall frame shutting out the cold night air.

"And then Julian Cross put his ring on your finger," Vincent whispered, his dark eyes burning with fierce, raw devotion. "And I had to sit in my office every single day, watching you wear his diamond, watching you pull into yourself, pretending that I was strong enough to let you go."

He took the mug of tea gently from her hands and set it on the stone balustrade behind her.

Then he reached down, taking both of her pale, slender hands in his heavy, calloused palms.

"I will never let anyone hurt you again, Elise," Vincent swore softly into the quiet night. "I will give you every resource in this city, every piece of freedom you have ever dreamed of, and every protection my family name can offer. But I will not pretend that I am just your employer anymore."

Elise looked at their joined hands—his large, powerful, scarred fingers wrapped safely around hers.

She looked up into his dark, beautiful, fierce face.

"I don't want an employer, Vincent," Elise whispered, her contralto voice rich with unshakeable certainty. "I haven't wanted an employer since the night you stayed awake with me when my brother was in surgery."

Vincent’s dark eyes flared with a sudden, intense heat. "Elise..."

"I was terrified of Julian," she said, stepping closer until her silk robe brushed against his charcoal trousers. "I was terrified of what he could do to my family. But I was never terrified of you, Vincent. Not once in two years."

She reached up with her right hand, setting her palm flat against his broad chest, feeling the strong, steady, heavy beat of his heart beneath his white silk shirt.

"You were the only place in this city where I felt completely safe," she whispered.

Vincent let out a low, rough breath that sounded like a prayer.

May you like

He wrapped his long, powerful arms around her waist, pulling her slender frame tightly against his broad body, and brought his lips down onto hers in a deep, fierce, breathtaking kiss that tasted of rain, victory, and endless devotion.

Elise surrendered completely to the touch, wrapping her arms around his neck, burying her fingers in his thick, dark hair, feeling the cold shadows of her past melt away under the heat of his absolute protection.
