Chapter 1 - The Public Betrayal

By the time Ethan Blackwood realized his pregnant wife was standing twelve feet behind him, his arm was already around another woman’s waist. Unfortunately for him, three television cameras were pointed directly at his face.
The ballroom erupted in applause under the white crystal chandeliers of Hawthorne Hall in Manhattan. Ethan smiled as if he owned not only the room, but every person inside it. He was thirty-eight, handsome in the polished, dangerous way magazines loved, founder and CEO of Northstar Vertex, and wealthy enough that financial news networks spent hours debating his exact net worth.
Beside him stood Sienna Vale—twenty-nine, auburn-haired, and wearing a striking scarlet gown. Ethan tightened his arm around her as she looked up at him with adoration. Neither of them noticed Claire.
Claire Blackwood stood near the foot of the marble staircase, one hand resting gently over her seven-month pregnant belly. Behind her stood her mother, Eleanor Beaumont, her older brother Miles, and her father, Charles Beaumont.
Millions watching the live broadcast recognized Ethan and Sienna. Very few recognized the three people behind Claire, but Wall Street did. Within forty-eight hours, Ethan would learn that the quiet family he had dismissed as a background detail of his wife's past was actually the foundation holding up his corporate empire.
The evening was supposed to be Ethan’s greatest triumph—the launch celebration for Helix, a revolutionary data platform. Analysts called him a genius, but Claire remembered when she called him the man she trusted most. For six months, Ethan had grown distant, coming home late, keeping his phone hidden, and taking private calls in the freezing air of their terrace.
Officially, Sienna was a digital artist hired for the Helix project. Unofficially, she had taken over Ethan’s life. Claire had never confronted him, terrified that hearing his lies would hurt worse than living with suspicion. After two devastating miscarriages, this pregnancy was her entire world, and her doctor had warned her to avoid stress at all costs.
At Hawthorne Hall, the television host asked Ethan about Sienna’s role in the project. Ethan laughed into the live microphone, declaring that Sienna had become enormously important to him in every way. Sienna teased him on air, whispering that his wife might be watching, before Ethan leaned down and kissed her temple on live television.
As the camera panned out, the operator caught Claire. The applause in the room died in uncomfortable waves. Ethan finally noticed the shift, followed the crowd's gaze, and froze.
Claire wore a midnight-blue maternity gown, her face pale with heartbreak. Ethan instinctively pulled his hand away from Sienna, muttering Claire's name into the live microphone.

Charles Beaumont stepped beside his daughter. At sixty-eight, Charles was the legend behind Beaumont Capital, a private investment empire holding massive stakes across multiple industries. He had never liked Ethan, but he had respected Claire’s independence.
Ethan stared at the family in shock, whispering a question that revealed his true priorities: he didn't ask if Claire was alright, but rather why her family was there at all.
