Chapter 9 - The Trial of the Council

One month after the storm at Blackwater Cove.
The grand council hall of the Rinaldi estate was filled with thirty representatives from the major family factions across the East Coast. High chandeliers cast golden light across polished dark mahogany tables, where men in expensive suits sat with quiet, tense expressions.
At the head of the room sat Dante Rinaldi.
Beside him, in a chair of equal height and craftsmanship, sat Mara Voss Rinaldi.
On the table in front of them rested two documents: the final consolidation agreement merging the Rinaldi shipping infrastructure with the Voss logistics network, and the formal decree stripping Wendell Rinaldi of all executive voting rights within the organization.
Wendell stood at the foot of the council table, guarded by two heavy Voss enforcers. He looked older, his face gaunt, his silver hair unkempt after four weeks of isolation at his secondary property in Illinois.
“This council was founded on blood,” Wendell shouted, his rasping voice echoing off the high stone walls. “Not on the whims of a woman who ran away on her wedding night! Dante is a weak leader who gave half his authority to an outsider!”
A heavy silence descended upon the room.
Several older council members shifted uncomfortably in their seats, looking toward Dante to see how he would respond to the public challenge.
Dante didn't reach for a weapon. He didn't even raise his voice.
He simply looked at Mara.
Mara stood up slowly. She wore a tailored black velvet gown, her grandmother’s diamond ring shining brilliantly under the chandeliers. She picked up a thick white folder from the table and held it up for the council to see.
“Three years ago, Uncle Wendell,” Mara said, her voice clear, elegant, and chillingly precise, “you established four off-shore holding companies in Panama. You used those companies to siphon eight percent of the annual revenue from the Rinaldi fuel docks, blaming the losses on union strikes.”
Wendell’s face drained of all color. “That’s... that’s a lie!”
“This folder contains the certified bank transfers signed by your personal attorney,” Mara continued smoothly, handing the folder to the senior councilman sitting nearest to her. “Along with the tax records proving that you used those funds to finance a private rebellion against Dante’s father before he died.”
The senior councilman flipped through the pages, his face darkening with intense fury. He looked up at Wendell with absolute contempt.
“Traitor,” the councilman muttered.
Mara turned her gaze back to Wendell.
“My husband did not give me half his authority, Wendell,” Mara said, her eyes flashing with dangerous, cold power. “I earned it by protecting this family from parasites like you. The Voss network doesn't answer to a weak man, and it certainly doesn't answer to a thief.”
She sat back down beside Dante, taking his hand openly in front of thirty silent, stunned family leaders.
Dante looked at the council.
“The vote is on the floor,” Dante announced coldly. “Shall Wendell Rinaldi be permanently banished from the East Coast territory?”
Every single council member raised their hand in unison.
Wendell slumped back into the arms of the guards, his eyes hollow as he was dragged out of the hall, his legacy ended forever in the very room where he had tried to seize the throne.
Dante lifted his glass of red wine, looking around the room at the men who had once doubted his right to rule.
“To the new order of Blackwater,” Dante declared softly.

The council members stood up as one, lifting their glasses in absolute, reverent salute.
“To Dante and Mara Rinaldi!”
