Chapter 10 - The Sovereign Horizon

Midnight settled over Lake Michigan, calm and still under a silver moon.

The guests had departed, the lights under the canopy had been dimmed, and the estate returned to a quiet, serene stillness.

Matteo and Elena walked along the private stone pier jutting out into the deep blue water, the gentle lap of small waves breaking against the granite boulders below.

Elena was wrapped in Matteo’s tuxedo jacket—the same jacket he had given her in the dressing room six months ago—its broad shoulders keeping out the cool night breeze.

She looked down at her right hand, where a clean, flawless diamond band sparkled under the moonlight.

"Do you ever think about Room 614?" she asked quietly, her eyes fixed on the horizon where the dark water met the starry sky.

Matteo wrapped his arm around her waist, pulling her close against his side.

"Only when I remember that it led me to you," Matteo said softly.

Elena smiled, resting her head against his chest, listening to the steady, strong beat of his heart beneath his shirt.

"Gabriel asked me today if I missed the operating room," she murmured.

"What did you tell him?"

"I told him that saving lives isn't only done with a scalpel," Elena said, looking up into his grey eyes. "Sometimes it's done by building something that protects people from the dark."

Matteo reached into his coat, pulled out his father’s black velvet box, and opened it under the moonlight.

Inside lay three small brass souvenir coins—the coins from his daughter’s memory chest that he had kept as a reminder of justice, truth, and the sacred trust between human beings.

He picked up one of the brass coins and tossed it far out into the dark water of the lake.

Splash.

"What was that wish for?" Elena asked softly.

Matteo looked at her, his eyes shining with pure, unyielding love.

"That wish was for the past," Matteo whispered. "It's gone."

He picked up the second coin and tossed it into the water.

Splash.

"And that one?"

"That one was for the city," Matteo said. "That it never forgets."

He held the third brass coin between his fingers, then placed it gently in Elena’s open palm, closing her fingers over the warm metal.

"And the third wish?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

Matteo leaned down, pressing his forehead against hers in the quiet stillness of the night.

"The third wish is yours, Elena," Matteo said. "Whatever you want for the rest of our lives."

Elena looked at the coin in her hand, then up at the man who had stood between her and the abyss, who had risked his empire, his name, and his life to give her back her freedom.

She threw the third coin into the dark, silver-lit water.

Splash.

"I don't need a wish, Matteo," Elena whispered, wrapping her arms around his neck and pulling him down into a kiss. "I already have everything."

Above them, the silver moon shone bright over the lake, illuminating the endless, beautiful horizon of the life they had built together from the ashes of the dark.
