Chapter 9 - The Legacy of Grace

Later that evening, the celebration moved to the penthouse garden of the Hall Estate in Greenwich, Connecticut.

Soft violin music floated through the evening air. Fairy lights wrapped around giant oak trees, illuminating manicured lawns, marble fountains, and stone pathways where city leaders, international diplomats, and close friends gathered to toast the new CEO.

Near the edge of the stone balcony overlooking the misty Hudson River stood Grace, holding a glass of sparkling water, watching the city lights twinkling in the distance.

Richard walked up beside her, holding a glass of aged scotch.

"A long way from that Brooklyn apartment, isn't it?" Richard asked gently, looking at the distant skyline.

Grace turned her head, looking at her father with a soft, warm smile. "It feels like another lifetime, Dad. Sometimes I look back at the girl who lived in that apartment and I feel pity for her. But mostly, I feel gratitude."

"Gratitude?" Richard raised an eyebrow. "For that monster?"

"Not for him," Grace corrected softly. "For the lesson. If I had never fallen to that floor, I would have spent my whole life living in the soft shadows, never knowing how strong I truly was. Tyler thought he was breaking me that night, Dad. But all he did was break the shell that was keeping me small."

A small voice called out from the garden path. "Mom! Grandpa!"

Leo came running down the stone steps, wearing his suit jacket loosely over his arms, holding a tiny wooden model of a skyscraper he had been playing with in the study.

"Look, Mom!" Leo shouted, holding up the model. "Grandpa taught me how to calculate the load-bearing pillar weights for the east tower!"

Grace laughed, kneeling down on the polished stone to embrace her son, pulling him tight against her chest. "Load-bearing pillars at seven years old? You're going to put the entire engineering division out of work before you reach high school, Leo."

"I want to build towers like Grandpa," Leo declared proudly, hugging his mother's neck. "And I want to protect people like you do, Mom."

Grace looked up at her father, her eyes shimmering with happy tears.

May you like

Richard knelt down beside them, setting his big, scarred hand over Leo’s small shoulder, looking at the boy with endless love.

"You will build great things, my boy," Richard said softly. "Because you come from a family that knows how to survive the storm."
