Chapter 10 - The Fortress by the Sea

Six months later.
Late autumn had returned to the northern coastline, bringing crisp, cool breezes that rattled the pine needles along the cliffside path.
On the manicured terrace overlooking the roaring ocean, a small, elegant evening reception was underway to celebrate the one-year anniversary of the Costa Restructuring.
Dozens of high-ranking legal officials, shipping executives, community leaders, and foundation board members milled about the stone patio, drinking champagne and enjoying the sweeping sunset views over the bay.
Nora stood near the stone balustrade wearing a breathtaking emerald green silk gown that draped gracefully over her frame. Her dark hair fell in soft waves around her shoulders, illuminated by the warm golden glow of the patio heaters. She held a glass of sparkling water, watching the white foam of the waves crashing against the rocks far below.
Beside her stood Gabriel, looking impossibly handsome in a tailored black tuxedo. He no longer looked like the tired, battle-worn man who had stepped out of the black SUV into the rain a year ago. His dark eyes were bright, his posture erect, his face carrying a relaxed, permanent sense of peace.
He reached out, sliding his arm around Nora’s waist and pulling her gently against his side. Nora rested her head comfortably against his broad shoulder, feeling the steady, rhythmic beat of his heart through his jacket.
“What are you thinking about?” Gabriel murmured into her hair.
“The alley,” Nora admitted softly, looking out at the dark water. “One year ago tonight.”
Gabriel’s arm tightened around her waist, holding her close. “If I could go back to that night... I’d buy that fifty-thousand-dollar marker a hundred times over.”
“You didn't buy me, Gabriel,” she reminded him with a soft, teasing smile.
“No,” he agreed, turning her gently in his arms so he could look down into her beautiful, shining eyes. “You bought my life when you stitched my ribs on that floor. I’ve just been trying to pay you back ever since.”
Nora laughed—a bright, ringing sound that carried over the roar of the ocean breeze. She reached up, placing her hand gently against his cheek, feeling the warm, solid reality of the man who had given her a fortress when she had nowhere to go.
Down at the main gates of the estate, two armed guards stood watch beneath the bright security lights, their eyes scanning the dark, quiet road. But inside the house on the cliff, behind the locked oak doors and high stone walls, there was only warmth, light, and an unbreakable peace.

Nora was no longer a secret sold in the dark. She was the architect of an empire, the guardian of a kingdom, and the woman who had conquered the dark without ever losing her light.
Gabriel leaned down, pressing his lips softly against hers, sealing their shared future beneath the bright, cold stars of the autumn sky.
