Chapter 5 - THE Serpents' WEAVE

While Adrien began executing his tactical destruction of the Sterling family financial network, the intricate web of deception behind Victoria Sterling’s actions began to unravel far faster than anyone involved had anticipated.
Victoria Sterling was not acting merely out of petty high-society jealousy, though her contempt for Grace’s modest background was entirely genuine. The reality was far more sinister and deeply rooted in the violent politics of Chicago’s underworld.
For months, Victoria’s father, Arthur Sterling, had been secretly colluding with Robert Moretti—Adrien’s own uncle and senior lieutenant.
Robert Moretti was a man consumed by bitterness. He believed that he, as the eldest surviving member of the original Moretti bloodline, should have inherited the leadership of the syndicate after Adrien’s father died. Instead, the family council had chosen Adrien, whose razor-sharp intellect, strategic brilliant, and cold ruthlessness had expanded the family's wealth tenfold.
Robert and Arthur Sterling had devised a quiet, insidious plot to weaken Adrien’s grip on the family business. They knew that Adrien was virtually untouchable through direct violence—his personal security was impenetrable, and his intelligence network was absolute.
However, they had also identified his single greatest vulnerability: Grace.
By orchestrating a situation where Grace felt worthless, unloved, and forced to leave Adrien, they hoped to plunge Adrien into a state of emotional instability and distraction. A distracted Adrien would make operational errors; he would mismanage key shipping alliances, allowing Robert to launch an internal vote of no confidence within the syndicate's governing board.
In return for her participation, Victoria had been promised that once Grace was driven out of the picture, Robert would use his newfound authority to orchestrate a formal political union between Adrien and Victoria, securing the Sterling family’s access to the syndicate’s massive wealth.
At two o'clock that afternoon, inside a dark, oak-paneled cigar lounge in downtown Chicago, Robert Moretti sat across from Arthur Sterling, sipping twenty-year-old scotch.
"Your daughter overplayed her hand, Arthur," Robert growled low, flicking ash from his cigar onto the carpet. "I told her to plant subtle doubts in the girl’s head over time. Instead, she cornered Grace at a public gala and laid it on with a trowel."
Arthur Sterling, a sharp-featured man with graying hair and immaculate tailoring, scoffed softly. "What does it matter? The girl took off her ring, didn't she? My daughter confirmed through her social contacts that Grace has been walking around Lincoln Park without her diamond for two days. Adrien is spiraling. My port sources tell me he missed two strategic briefings this morning."
"Adrien isn't spiraling, you fool!" Robert snapped, leaning forward, his eyes burning with anger. "He just initiated a full federal customs audit on your three container ships at Pier 42! Half your asset portfolio is currently frozen on the docks!"
Arthur Sterling’s face turned gray. He nearly dropped his glass of scotch. "What? How could he possibly link Pier 42 to me so quickly? That shipping line was buried under four layer-cake shell companies in Panama!"
"Adrien doesn't need proof to strike; he needs a suspicion," Robert hissed, gripping his glass until his knuckles turned white. "He knows someone targeted his wife. He’s tearing through the city brick by brick until he finds out who ordered the strike. If he traces this back to me..."
"He won't," Arthur said quickly, cold sweat breaking out on his forehead. "Victoria didn't mention your name. She simply framed it as high-society gossip. There is no physical evidence linking us to the gala conversation."
"You don't understand my nephew, Arthur," Robert said softly, a genuine shiver of fear running down his spine. "Adrien doesn't operate like a court of law. He doesn't need physical evidence. He operates on instinct and absolute destruction. If he finds out Victoria did this to Grace, he won't just ruin your business. He will erase your bloodline from this city."
Before Arthur Sterling could respond, his expensive smartphone began to ring incessantly on the polished mahogany table. He picked it up with a trembling hand, looking at the caller ID.
"It’s Victoria," Arthur swallowed hard, hitting the speaker button. "Victoria? What's going on?"
"Dad!" Victoria’s frantic, hysterical voice filled the private lounge. "Dad, you have to help me! The bank just froze all my personal accounts! My credit cards were declined at the boutique, my private driver just picked up my car saying the lease was terminated, and there are four dark SUVs parked outside my townhome!"
Arthur stood up so quickly his chair knocked backward onto the floor. "What dark SUVs?"
"They're Moretti vehicles, Dad!" Victoria screamed into the phone, her voice shaking with uncharacteristic terror. "Marcus Reed is standing on my front porch right now with a legal injunction and four armed men! He told me... he told me Mr. Moretti has invited us all to dinner at your Gold Coast estate tonight!"

Robert Moretti closed his eyes, his cigar slipping from his fingers.
"It’s over," Robert whispered, his voice completely devoid of hope. "He knows."
