Chapter 10 - The Sovereign Wall

A year later, on a warm autumn afternoon.
The leaves along the driveway of the estate had turned vibrant shades of gold, crimson, and deep orange. The air was crisp and sweet, carrying the scent of woodsmoke and fallen oak leaves from the surrounding forest.
A grand outdoor reception was being held in the courtyard behind the main house.
Dozens of guests—legitimate business leaders, city officials, and close family friends—gathered around long tables decorated with white roses, glowing lanterns, and crystal glassware.
Clare stood near the stone archway of the patio, wearing an exquisite ivory lace gown that caught the golden light of the setting sun. Her dark hair was styled softly up, pinned with delicate pearl clips.
Beside her stood Dante, looking magnificent in a dark tailored tuxedo, his arm wrapped firmly around her waist.
On the third finger of Clare’s left hand rested a simple, breathtaking platinum band set with an emerald-cut diamond—a ring that had belonged to Dante’s mother, passed down to the woman who had rebuilt the family from its foundation.
Lily ran past them in a matching ivory flower girl dress, holding a small basket of rose petals, with Nero trotting proudly at her side. The giant dog wore a custom black bow tie attached to his leather collar, looking remarkably distinguished despite his massive size.
Arthur Sterling, a senior city commissioner and longtime friend of the Moretti family, walked up to the couple holding a glass of champagne.
“It’s an incredible transformation, Dante,” Sterling said, looking around the bright, joyful courtyard. “I’ve been coming to this house for twenty years, and I’ve never seen it feel so alive.”
“That’s because the house finally has a soul, Arthur,” Dante said, looking down at Clare with an expression of profound, unshakeable devotion.
“And the security?” Sterling asked with a subtle wink. “Is the perimeter safe?”
Dante laughed softly, clinking his glass against Sterling’s. “The perimeter is guarded by the sharpest mind in Chicago and a dog who can hear a lie through six inches of solid stone.”
As the sun began to dip below the horizon, painting the sky in brilliant hues of purple and gold, Dante took Clare’s hand and led her down the stone steps toward the garden path.
Nero followed close behind, his dark eyes scanning the tree line, his tail wagging softly in the cool evening breeze.
They stopped near the ancient stone fountain at the center of the garden. Dante pulled Clare into his arms, pulling her close against his chest.
“Do you remember the night in the wine cellar?” Dante asked softly, looking down into her eyes.
“Every detail,” Clare replied, resting her head against his shoulder. “I thought the walls were closing in on us.”
“The walls were just stone, Clare,” Dante whispered, pressing a soft kiss to her forehead. “You were the one who saw through them. You showed me that real strength isn't about hiding behind guards and iron gates. It’s about knowing who stands beside you when the lights go out.”
Clare looked up into his eyes, feeling the steady, powerful beat of his heart beneath her hand. She looked toward the house—the towering limestone structure that had once felt like a cold, dangerous fortress, now glowing warmly with light, laughter, and love.
She reached down, her fingers brushing against Nero’s broad head as the giant dog rested his chin against her skirt.

“The house is quiet now, Dante,” Clare whispered with a serene, beautiful smile.
“No, my love,” Dante corrected gently, pulling her closer as the stars began to appear in the autumn sky. “The house is finally at peace.”
