Chapter 4 - The Boardroom of Shadows

The next morning broke crisp and clear, the sun rising over Lake Michigan and casting bright golden rays across Elena’s new suite.

When she woke up, she found a garment rack standing near the wardrobe. Hanging on it was a stunning cream-colored wool trouser suit, accompanied by a silk blouse and dark leather heels—tailored precisely to her measurements.

Elena dressed slowly, feeling the soft, expensive fabric against her skin. Sitting at the vanity table, she applied a light coat of lip gloss, staring at her sleek new hair. She looked like a woman who commanded respect, a woman who belonged in the marble halls of power.

A knock sounded at her door.

When she opened it, Damian stood in the hallway. He wore a sharp black suit with a dark grey tie, looking every bit the formidable Don of the Moretti syndicate. But when his gaze swept over her in the cream suit, his dark eyes softened into pure admiration.

“Good morning, Elena,” he said, his voice low and warm. “You look breathtaking.”

Elena felt a flush of heat rise to her cheeks. “Good morning, Damian. Did you sleep?”

“I don't sleep much when I’m at war,” Damian admitted honestly, offering his arm to her. “Come downstairs. Our legal team and executive board are waiting in the main study.”

Elena hesitated for a fraction of a second, then slid her arm through his. The solid strength of his arm beneath her hand gave her an instant surge of confidence.

Together, they walked down the grand staircase, passing several house staff members who bowed their heads respectfully as Elena passed.

They reached the heavy mahogany doors of the private study at the rear of the mansion. Damian pushed the doors open, leading Elena into a vast, oak-paneled room lined with ancient leather-bound books, heavy oil paintings, and a massive conference table made of polished mahogany.

Sitting around the table were six older men in dark suits—the senior consigliere, legal advisers, and chief financial officers of the Moretti business empire.

When Damian and Elena entered, all six men stood up instantly, bowing their heads toward Damian.

“Gentlemen,” Damian announced, his voice echoing authoritatively through the room. “This is Miss Elena Vasquez, daughter of Julian Vasquez.”

A low murmur passed through the older men. An elderly lawyer with silver hair and wire-rimmed glasses stepped forward, pulling a thick leather folder from his briefcase.

“Miss Vasquez,” the lawyer said politely. “I am Arthur Vance, chief legal counsel for the Moretti family. Twenty years ago, I co-signed the blood ledger with your late father.”

Elena looked at the silver-haired lawyer, her heart beating fast. “You knew my father?”

“Julian Vasquez was the brilliant mind of his generation,” Arthur said, his eyes filled with deep respect. “His work exposed the systematic fraud within the Bellini operations. Today, we are here to execute the final clause of his legacy.”

Arthur opened the leather folder, laying out several thick legal documents across the mahogany table.

“Under the terms of the 2006 agreement,” Arthur explained, pointing to the signature lines, “you are officially granted twenty percent ownership of Moretti Logistics, including the commercial shipping ports, real estate holdings, and hotel networks. Furthermore, the evidence your father left behind has been compiled into a formal indictment against Antonio Bellini.”

Elena looked down at the documents, seeing her father’s elegant signature preserved alongside the bold, dark signature of Damian’s late father. Tears pricked her eyes as she realized the true extent of her father’s sacrifice: even while facing prison and disgrace, he had spent his final days securing her future.

Damian stepped up beside her, placing a smooth silver pen in her hand.

“Sign them, Elena,” Damian whispered near her ear. “Take back what they stole from your family.”

Elena took a deep breath, dipped the pen, and signed her name on the parchment—bold, clear, and unyielding.

Suddenly, the doors of the study flew open.

A young guard, his face pale and sweating, rushed into the room, holding a encrypted satellite phone.

“Don Damian!” the guard gasped, breathless. “We have a breach! Antonio Bellini has mobilized his entire crew. They’ve just seized Port 4 at the Chicago River... and they’re demanding Miss Vasquez be turned over to them by noon, or they blow up the fuel tankers!”
