Chapter 6 - Cleaning House

By midnight, the estate was entirely silent.

The vehicles belonging to Margaret, Ashley, and Michael had been impounded or repossessed, leaving only my own SUV in the long driveway. The fraudulent staff members—the security guard at the gate and the domestic supervisor who had taken orders from Ashley to mistreat Emily—had been terminated and escorted off the premises by Vance's team.

The mansion felt vast, quiet, and finally clean.

I walked through the long halls, personally locking the doors and turning down the lights, before making my way to the master suite upstairs. The room had been untouched by my family—a sanctuary that Emily had managed to lock away from their intrusion.

Inside, Emily was sitting on the edge of the large king-sized bed. She had changed into a soft silk robe, her hair clean and brushed, though the exhaustion of months of emotional torture was still visible in the lines around her eyes and the pale tone of her skin. The diamond necklace still rested against her collarbone; she hadn't taken it off.

I walked over, sitting beside her, and gently took her hands into mine. Her fingers were still rough from the harsh chemicals of the dish soaps, but to me, they were the hands of the woman who had held my life together when everything else was falling apart.

"I'm sorry, Emily," I said softly, my voice filled with genuine pain. "I am so, so sorry I wasn't here. I was so focused on building a financial empire for our future that I left you vulnerable to those monsters."

Emily shook her head, tears filling her eyes again, but she smiled softly. "You didn't know, Daniel. They were so clever... at first, they were nice. Margaret said she wanted to help me adjust to the new estate. Then Ashley started taking control of the mail, changing the passcodes, telling the staff that I was just a guest. They threatened to tell you I was wasting your money if I complained. They made me feel so small... so useless."

"You are the foundation of everything I have," I said fiercely, leaning in to press my forehead against hers. "Without you, there is no empire. There is no home. Tomorrow, we restructure everything. Every corporate board, every trust, every account will require your direct signature. You will never be made to feel powerless again."

She leaned into my embrace, burying her face against my chest, and for the first time in months, she wept freely—releasing the fear, the isolation, and the heavy burden she had carried alone for so long. I held her tightly, stroking her hair, making a silent vow that no one would ever hurt her again.

The next morning broke bright and clear over Beverly Hills. Sunlight flooded through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the master bedroom.

By eight o'clock, Arthur Vance arrived at the estate with a team of independent domestic managers and personal security specialists. They were not corporate stooges or family acquaintances; they were vetted professionals hired to ensure the estate was managed with absolute transparency and respect for Emily.

"Good morning, Mrs. Carter," Vance said respectfully as Emily stepped into the study, dressed in an elegant cream suit.

Emily paused for a second, hearing the respect in his voice—a stark contrast to the dismissive taunts of Margaret and Ashley. She stood tall, her shoulders back. "Good morning, Mr. Vance."

"We have finalized the restructuring documents," Vance said, laying out a neat stack of papers on the mahogany desk. "As of today, fifty percent of all voting shares in the Carter Restaurant Group and seventy percent of all real estate holdings have been officially transferred into your sole name. Any transaction exceeding ten thousand dollars will require your explicit authorization."

Emily looked at me, her eyes wide. "Daniel... this is too much."

"It's what should have been done from the start," I replied, coming up beside her and putting my arm around her waist. "You're not just my wife, Emily. You're my partner. It's time the world—and my family—remembers that."
